Another I don't think I posted up. Just a charity shop Music For Pleasure find. Singer/pianist Nellie Lutcher.
Had a couple of tracks on comps but hadn't realised how good she was, distinctive style, although even she can't save "Alexander's Ragtime Band" which I've always hated.

Playing another one I think I forgot to post when I bought it last year. After the disappointing "Sinners" soundtrack a few months back I've been listening to blues and gospel more...

Walter de Figueiredo "Umbanda" 🇧🇷
Got this a while back but think I forgot to post it. Call-and-response vocals with lots of percussion.
I think Umbanda is another religion that's a mix of various things, in this case Spiritism, Catholicism and Afro-Brazilian beliefs

Sylvia Moore "Jungle Magic" - strange, folky hippy exotica 🌴
Found a copy a while back year but missing the record (had a SAW record inside!)
Got this ex-BBC copy slightly cheaply on eBay (seller made the big mistake of trying to remove the stickers), to pair up with the nice sleeve

Some records working well with the cold today - Jelloul Osman (Tunisian bagpipes, from last year's #VinylSanta , banging), Alasdair Roberts & Volvir, Henry Wolff and Nancy Jennings "Tibetan Bells", and Medieval songs c.1300 on Das Alte Werk

Another recent buy - SQÜRL "Some Music for Robby Müller" (2020)
Jim Jarmusch and someone else doing an atmospheric guitar-y soundtrack thing.
Big thumbs down to Oxfam's new price stickers, one of which has taken a chunk of cover with it

The Rural Tradition "The Miserable Effects of a Wasted Life" - found this recently, had seen it online years ago when it had already sold out and forgotten about it. From 2007 on Michael Tanner's Dorset Paeans label. A folky, wonky, lo-fi thing

Also saw some tat - a difficult to read Millennium Dome clock, anyone?

Some very pleasing looking vintage book club type books in a charity today, unfortunately all turned out to be sport related 💤

In case you didn’t know- Bud Tutmarc’s dad invented the electric bass guitar, in 1936. Waaaaay ahead of his time

Some above average xian charity shop buys, first three were four for a pound (not pictured, a bunch more crap ones that went straight back 😀)

I'd hope they got a fair bit of money - a copy of this is in almost every charity shop!
Imagine inventing Daft Punk but getting none of the money tho. That's a solid super villain origin story right there.

Popped out to post a Discogs order and found a first edition Osbert Lancaster in a charity shop (which was nice).
Saw an exhibition of his stuff a while back, but never had any of his books.(internet is suggesting it might have been at the Wallace Collection way back in 2008, time flies 😲)

Earlier this year I started researching/writing an extensive piece about the Stalag rhythm as a follow up to my Sleng Teng piece. It's still in the works, but I couldn't miss the 40th anniversary reissue of Ring The Alarm without penning a few words for @thequietus.com thequietus.com/quietus-revi...
Reissue of the Week: Tenor Saw's 'Ring The Alarm'
1985 was ostensibly the year everything changed for the Jamaican music industry, with the Casio tones of Wayne Smith’s ‘Under Mi Sleng Teng’ seeing every producer reaching for a synth and drum machine...

Some Scottish folk finds - Jean Redpath (not doing Robert Burns for once), "Bothy Ballads" from the Scottish Tradition series, "The Silver Bow" Shetland fiddle, and Angus Chisholm (Canadian fiddler from the 78 era) 🎻

(got a bit of a backlog of stuff to post up in case you couldn't tell)

Some recent charity shop buys (but proper money, had to pay more than a pound for these! 😲)
Colin Blunstone "One Year" (after this for ages, usually see it scratched!), Chris Joss "Man With a Suitcase" (fake OST, misread this as "Man IN a Suitcase", oops), Cumbia comp on World Circuit and "Don" OST
November 14, 2025 at 10:39 AM
Some comps picked up recently - the two Greek ones with MVE tokens, and two new Cumbia ones.
"Mortika" is 78 era 2LP box on Mississippi/Canary, "Ena Tefariki" is 1960s, on Radio Martika. Then also on RM are Edmundo Arias and Lucho Bermudez cumbia comps

Supermarket music update - just remembered that I was in Tesco a few days ago and they were playing the old Scooby Doo theme 😀

Was very pleased to find these autobiographies of two less talkative stars of the golden age of Hollywood in charity shops recently. Just finished "Me Cheeta", and it's great 😀

This Nubya Garcia track was very nice - never got round to checking out her "Odyssey" album last year (which this is from), but I definitely should do that soon.
(The vibe slightly spoiled by Ian Skelly playing "The Thieving Magpie" immediately afterwards 😀)

Jonna Gault was a new one on me but "Symphonopop Scene" and a £2 price tag made it an instant buy. Looks like it was the right decision, e.g.

Some groovy finds from yesterday's Groovy Fayre
(details in Alt)
Thought it was a good year, very busy though, and saw quite a few things I wanted being purchased literally in front of me

Accidentally made a mini Wrong Tom style thread here in the replies... anyway, The Frankie Cutlass album was great, shame he didn't make another. Also '96 a contender for best year in hip hop? Just before the shiny suit Bad Boy era/error 😠
I like the video which did that common thing in hip-hop videos of including a bit of second track at the end - here it's the track featuring Heltah Skeltah, who back in 96 were an example of the then new style (I love Biz Marie's face when they start up 😀)
