I saw All That Jazz for the first time this year and I've thought about it every day since.
What is the best movie not from this year that you’ve seen this year? Bonus points if you say why

Corey is right that the best ending is a filmmaker ending their film about the shattered dreams of filmmaking with a beautiful ode to the magic of the movies he just picked the wrong one. The correct answer is Close Your Eyes.

A question I always want to ask people making the "trans rights have gone too far on sports and youth and we need to find the sensible centre" people is: imagine you get what you want...
Would be amazing to get a single piece of media on this topic centered on the right's firehose of bigotry and misinformation rather than "the trans rights movement's shortcomings"

As someone who games quite a bit it's entirely possible I will spend less on video games this year than I will on my mubi go subscription, which only helps to limit my cinema spending by a bit.
Absolutely laughable to call gaming "one of the most expensive hobbies around" because a video game costs ten dollars more. Gamers are children and should be treated with distain.

It's crazy that the new Mission Impossible movie is like the only mainstream outlet of any sort that will openly say Israel has nuclear weapons. Like I'm still trying to wrap my head around that.

After Hours is one of the great nightmare thrillers and it's lead characters psychology is just "horny and wants to get laid"
and half the time those old thrillers didn’t need to be psychological at all, just a wrong man, because they got by on characterization through dialogue and performance, not traumatic backstory

I think this is crazy to me for other reasons (those movies should've been nominated for sound design)
Since 1930, there have only been eight occasions when the ONLY Oscar nomination for a film was for Best Director. Two of those nominations were for David Lynch: "Blue Velvet" (1986) and "Mulholland Dr." (2001, the last time it happened).

Feels like we went from 5 to 100 going straight from "we can have a few Taylor Swift gigs in Croke Park" to "the NFL is coming to Croke Park".

Been spending most of today trying to figure out why they included the Utah jazz in this deal. Like how the hell did that happen.

The best band of all time and there's no way you'll get me to listen to strangers to ourselves again.
modest mouse is an incredible band because you can actively feel them shift from subversive indie rock into coworker music over their 30 year discography

Never really understood people having hard and fast rules on this stuff, this is always a how long is a piece of string question for me. I have cinema screens where I would never go near the first seven rows and screens where I refuse to sit in the back half of the rows.

Absolutely insane to me that we're getting the fifth year anniversary of Parasite winning best picture before we get Bong Joon Ho's followup to Parasite.

Unfortunately if someone I knew showed up eight months after I last saw them with an eye patch and Carl the llama I would fall instantly in love. I would believe that they were my soulmate.
Dating advice for straight women and girls is always like DON'T let him know you're interested DO NOT engage with him in any way DON'T make him aware you exist IDEALLY disappear in the middle of the night for six to eight months and return with an eye-patch and a llama named Carl

One of these days Elon's gonna start the worst video game company of all time.
I am a conservative now, in that I think being a grown man spending eight hours a day publicly complaining about the hotness of video game women should be met with shame, contempt, and disdain by the rest of society.
The US's new Shadow President is one of the biggest gooners on the planet, as evidenced by these last 12 hours of posting and I'm sure it's fine

I don't have a problem with when year end lists are run but I do hate when a publication decides to include December releases in their year end list the following year, like when Pitchfork put SOS on their best of 2023 list because it came out in December 2022 after they published their 2022 list.
In the latest Ask A Music Critic, a reader asks a common question: Why do year-end lists run before the end of the year?

I haven't seen it yet, will probably do so over the month, but Roxana is articulating my fears of what this show would be like having watched the trailers: another depiction of the troubles that skips the actual conditions of life on the ground to get to the car bombs.
I wrote about SAY NOTHING, my frustrations with how much the TV adaptation left out of the source material, and particularly how those exclusions give us a limited perspective of the soul-deadening weight of occupation. @vulture.com:
