Shutting down the government is a big deal. People have been hurt in big ways as a result of the decision. To have that suffering be for nothing—to re-open the government without actually having protected people’s health insurance and economic well-being—is unconscionable.

God knows I've never seen a party this capable of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

Kinda indicative of the times that a large portion of the second hour of my church services (used for Gospel doctrine discussions most of the time) were used to figure out how the hell we are gonna feed all the starving people in our congregation and our neighborhood

the thing about this is that a) small states do not have any interests that are inherent to their size (no less than james madison understood this) b) the senate is organized along party lines which makes the small/big distinction almost irrelevant and c) the filibuster has never been used this way
Underrated aspect of killing the filibuster is making pundit hacks at Cook Political p-p-p-piss their pants

One analytical model shows that, as of November 5th, the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D. has already caused the deaths of 600,000 people, two-thirds of them children. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/jUzNSc

Zohran Mamdani won young men 18-29 by 40 points.

40!

And he did so by standing FOR economic justice, FOR Trans rights, FOR immigrant rights, FOR labor rights, FOR Palestinian rights, & FOR diversity—& still unapologetically dunking on Trump.

He is anti-MAGA w/o throwing people under the bus.

What I find remarkable is that Prop 50 outperformed the 2024 margins in a good number of countries, even ones that went Republican. The image is obv not comprehensive (and not done counting), but some of the shift are pretty crazy. Look at Riverside! + 1.4 R to + 14 Prop 50

I've had conversations with family that are essentially this. But unfortunately for them, in cases like SNAP, ACA, or Medicare/Medicaid, they won't be able merely brush off their skyrocketing cost of living with willful ignorance.
This week I had someone tell me they're not worried about SNAP being cut off because "that's illegal, so it's impossible Trump could do that, so obviously it's just media sensationalism." Another person told me they weren't worried about ICE because "they can't detain you if you're legally here."

Reading Seva Gunitsky's work on hegemonic transitions and democratization. I'm amazed at how willing many liberal political scientists and theorists were persuaded to fascism

Why then is the discipline so united against Trump today? Among many things, it is too profoundly stupid to be seductive
