Just in time for New Year's Eve, here's my take on Jean-Paul Sartre's classic French drama NO EXIT... but in #LARP form! This is my first attempt at the genre, written for @metaparadox.bsky.social's #LitformLARPJam over on itch.io

Wound up posting this way, way later than I was hoping to, but it's here! Let me know what you think, or whether this lines up with what you've been finding as you read the game docs.

I’m a really big fan of RA Carter’s work, which I first came across because weeks both made Bitsy games based on Borges stories. Fascinating, engrossing, and full Of endless, delightful possibility.
My offering for any passing traffic, if some relief from online despair is needed - a whole series of Bitsy games that depict unusual little worlds and invite you to meditate with them. racarter.itch.io #bitsy #games #gaming

Happy 12th Night, everyone! I'm writing a blog about how the first playtest of MERELY PLAYERS went, and some changes I want to implement going forward and try in the next playtest, but here's the link to the current demo in the meantime... gowanusaurusrex.itch.io/merely-players

What to randomise when you’re randomising
You may have noticed that a common theme in my reviews is that I criticise people’s random tables: Their wilderness generators, their wandering monsters, their weather tables, their treasure …

A good tip for narrative more generally.
Reframing my GM mindset from “challenge comes from threatening the PCs’ lives” to “challenge comes from threatening their goals” has made my experience at the table more fun.

The tension can come from the chance of them completing their goals rather than the possibility of death.

Hey, that's me! Inspired by my conversation with @newmadras.bsky.social, I dig into what it means to think about solo rpgs as "open-ended" or "close-ended" and what makes solo RPGs replayable. I end by considering what these ideas could mean for traditional, group RPGs.

I hope you check it out!!
Diving into 2026, the Lone Toad continues guest posts with Asa Donald of Backward Tabletop. Asa talks about Open-Ended and Close-Ended Solo RPGs, and how traditional play can learn from them.

Remember when Bone was in Disney Adventures magazine? I certainly do, so I dug into the story behind its time there, talking with @jeffsmithsbone.bsky.social, @comixace.bsky.social, Marv Wolfman, and @cliffchiang.bsky.social about the how it all came together and its impact.

While it might be difficult to imagine in 2025, a magazine was one of the biggest deals for kids back in the 1990s. Disney Adventures, a monthly, digest-sized publication, was loaded with everything t...

This sentiment was originally meant as part of a discussion in a broader #TTRPG discourse, however, I think it is beautiful in & of itself.

*This* is what I want to most try to remember in 2026, as AI continues to plague our existence; I want to create, and to work, and to love Human creation 🤲
Alas, it is labor. For joy, it is labor.
God alone cannot do all the work.
If you crave meaning, find it. Build it. It is not hard. It just takes labor to capture the full meaning of expression you wish to convey.

In a world of infatuation, learn what love is - and be driven by it unto madness.

Okay, so my second #LARP entry for @metaparadox.bsky.social's #LitformLARPJam, THE COTTONTAILS, may take a little more time than I was hoping. (Holidays, and all.) That said, the page is up and I have a three page preview available for free download!

The year is 1969, a 25 year old Jim Dunnigan designs the wargame "Up Against the Wall, Motherf*****", a game about the student demonstrations at Columbia. One player plays the Administration and the other the Radicals.
