This isn't about moral purity or personal virtue. It's about facing reality.

Because moral progress begins with a willingness to look—especially when what we see is uncomfortable.

Here's a comparison that makes the abstraction impossible to ignore:
All wild animals on Earth: 100 million tons All farmed animals: 700 million tons

When we talk about "animals" today, we're mostly talking about a few species bred and killed at industrial scale.

For a long time, I didn't grasp the scale myself. I was a pretty committed carnivore.

Like most people, I had no real sense of what this system actually entails. And that ignorance isn't accidental—there's a powerful incentive to keep it that way.

We think of wars as the pinnacle of human violence. The numbers tell a different story.

Every year, humans slaughter around 80 billion animals. That's more suffering than all wars combined.

I'm reluctant to criticize people's looks. But Pamela Jo Bondi is such a hard-looking woman. She looks like the petulant person who just erroneously declined your charge for an incinerated hot dog at a GT gas station.

Pam Bondi telling Minneapolis that ICE will be recalled *only* when that blue city turns over its voter rolls is a clear reveal that this isn't about immigration. It's about interfering with upcoming elections that may not favor Donald Trump.

It's extortion.

TikTok is under right wing billionaire control now. Plan your exit strategy.
This morning, I recorded a video on TikTok about why DHS’s arguments for the power to enter homes without judicial warrants in immigration cases are bunk.

Nine hours later, TikTok still says my video is “under review,” and can’t be shared.

Well, here’s a link:

People are right to be incensed, but there are more names to uplift. ICE killed an immigrant man named Silverio Villegas González in Chicagoland. He had children. Victor Manuel Diaz was kidnapped in Minneapolis and died in ICE custody on January 14. Their names deserve to be repeated, too.

It's not just that these professional politics observers somehow failed to spot the obvious rise of American nativist thuggery.

It's how much energy they devoted to arguing the real problem was the volume, tone, and vocabulary of those raising the alarm about it.

Remarkable stat.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara: "People have had enough. This is the third shooting in less than 3 weeks. The MPD went the entire year last year recovering about 900 guns from the street, arresting hundreds of violent offenders, and we didn't shoot anyone ... this is not sustainable."

I attempted to go to an ICE patrol training here in LA this morning and they had to turn most of us away because of capacity issues and even as I was leaving I saw a ton more folks showing up

so that’s how well their attempts to scare everyone away are going, even in the face of murder

Bill Kristol sees this shit clearly. I don't know how so many elected Democrats don't.
Also, may I say that I don’t agree with people saying ICE and CBP need “more training.” They’re doing exactly what this administration has trained them to—impose a reign of fear in blue cities. They don’t need more training. They need to be ripped up root and branch.

Sorry not sorry to upset so many people, but the US can be going through a moment (obviously) and still be a superpower, or it could all be perfectly sane (occasionally) and Europe would still not be wise to be utterly dependent.
My feed is full of the USA mostly I suspect from people who would suggest the special relationship is not a thing...

We can and should demand more, and this point is no reason to let up. But I do want to acknowledge something: to get members of Congress talking like this is necessary even if it's insufficient. And it's absolutely not sufficient. But it is still a necessary step if we want them to ever do the rest.
I am doing my best to respond to this without a string of expletives. But let's be very clear. What just happened in Minnesota was cold blooded murder of a civilian by out of control federal agents, aided and abetted by the entire Trump administration and their fascist enablers.

Canada is the largest market for US goods and services. This is insanity. It is also illegal. I think Canada and Europe should develop a trade version of NATO Article 5. Make an attack on any subject to a strong response from all. It’s the only way to shut down Trump. Markets must also spank him.

Corporate media knew MN interfaith leaders were coordinating a historic protest with thousands of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus & non-believers working TOGETHER.

And none showed up.
