Growing up in New Zealand in the eighties I was always a sucker for a TV-tie-in ice lolly (except we called them 'ice blocks')

As well as the Alf abomination I have fond memories of chowing down on a Mr T and a Fonzie running down my arm on a particularly hot day

There's a distinct smell from my childhood which I cannot replicate - the winey aroma of my primary school ditto machine which printed out worksheets onto coarse grade A4 paper in purple ink.

For some reason that's all I can think about this morning.

This week’s Major Star is Mrs Miggins, a welcome female addition to the sausage fest that is Blackadder The Third. Far from having a “brain the size of a sultana” she reveals herself to be a canny businesswoman with a floury finger on the pulse of the times.

Encouraged by @goonpod.bsky.social I watched It's Trad, Dad! and had a great time with it. It's just hard to believe that a bunch of teenagers would get so excited about bands covering songs that even sounded old when their own parents were kids.

Going to watch The Stalls of Barchester tonight. Never seen it but it's got Robert Hardy and I'm going to predict that he delivers his lines at a shout

On this day 71 years ago:

LURGI STRIKES BRITAIN was first broadcast

It was also Eric Sykes' first joint writing credit on the Goon Show

"So I said, 'I'd only support the death penalty in very extreme circumstances, such as high treason or mass murder, and even then only if it was proven 100% that they were guilty...' what did I say Roy?"
"You said, 'Anybody not wearing a poppy from late August onwards should be taken out and shot.'"

A few years back Tyler had the great pleasure of chatting to one of his comedy heroes - Mark talked about his career, the fine art of devilment and dancing to pop music with Ma Boswell from Bread

If you want to listen to the full album straight through, I've uploaded the entire thing to youtube. And it's the stereo mix, so you can get an idea of just how sophisticated George Martin's "sound picture" idea was, even in 1962.

It doesn't seem like twenty years since my wife and I were cast headlong into parenthood, wholly under-prepared yet charged with a solemn trust: the safe care and upbringing of the tiny human being we had brought into the world.

Luckily TV had already taught me one important rule of child-rearing

Important. Especially for people in the U.K., where we consider swearing a highly-evolved artform.
If you aren't seeing skeets from some of your fave people, they might have been labeled "Rude" by bsky mods. Idk what they are thinking, I don't need a mommy to tell me who to be buddies with. Anyway, go into Settings > moderation > bluesky moderation (advanced) and turn Rude off.

Exactly 50 years ago today, on Thursday 6th November 1975, Spike Milligan's Q6 series began on BBC2.

Pioneering Milligan, unpredictable as ever and looking to try a new direction, included a sketch about the war, one where he was dressed as a tramp and one with a woman with big boobs.

I'll be covering George Martin's comedy recordings in the next couple of months in Season 2 of PTB, but if you want a more expansive look at one of the albums that shows Martin's mastery of the studio pre-Beatles, this installment of Goon Pod is for you!

Despite my startling resemblance to a 1926 box brownie I am, in fact, not a camera.
I must confirm that I, who have nothing, actually have a lot of things.
I must confirm that when I get knocked down, I do *not* get up again, and you are in fact going to keeo me down.

While researching for a future show I found a Victor Lewis-Smith piece from the Evening Standard where he suggests he might throw up on his shoes if he has to hear another of Harry Secombe’s rather whiskery Goon Show anecdotes.

Harsh, but I did sometimes yearn for some real dope from Sir Ned
