Few things are more pleasing than hearing a variety of languages being spoken organically in my community - give me more neighbors who speak a different language please!!
I would rather live next door to someone who speaks another language than live next door to someone who doesn’t want to live near people who speak other languages. I know nothing about Person A but I know person B is a shitbird.
Vance says it is "totally reasonable and acceptable" for people to not want to live next door to people who speak a different language than they do

The interesting logical outcome of this for me is that now the major press agencies can ONLY report based on leaked/unofficial information, which is precisely what the Pentagon was trying to prevent 🤷‍♂️
“The Defense Department has confiscated the badges of the Pentagon reporters from virtually every major media organization in America,” the Pentagon Press Association said

Here's what WPR had to say about yesterday's hearing on nuclear energy in Wisconsin
'The nuclear renaissance': Wisconsin lawmakers discuss pro-nuclear energy bills
Wisconsin could become a leader in nuclear technology and should consider building new nuclear reactors, scientists and lawmakers say.

It was great to share my thoughts and expertise with the Wisconsin Assembly Committee on Jobs and Economy today, who were discussing two bills offering support for nuclear energy in our state. Here is my testimony to the committee. (Link to video will come soon)

Maybe monoatomic graphite? Or monoatomic coal?

For those being forced to remove mention of the element with an atomic number of 12 from govt documents about climate and biogeochemical cycling, how about using an old term: Carbonic anhydride

“A Trump administration plan would end the independence of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, where similar oversight muzzling has led to nuclear disasters overseas”

Profs. Huff, Corradini and I shared our concerns with @sciam.bsky.social about a dangerous Executive Order from last month
The Feb. 18 E.O. stripping regulators of independence is dangerous and undermines new nuclear energy.

Profs. Wilson, Corradini, and I told @sciam.bsky.social : The NRC must remain independent to provide public confidence in the safe implementation of this important technology. @gonuke.bsky.social

Kudos to @nuclearkatie.com who drafted an extra chapter for her dissertation as part of the Wisconsin Initiative for Science Literacy's "Communicating PhD Research to the Public" program. Read it for yourself here:

While an immediate funding freeze is a blunt instrument that impacts a wide swath of people from many backgrounds, I can’t help but wonder if the impacts are more concentrated in institutions/organizations and their workforces that are less aligned with the new administration - #itsafeaturenotabug

As an engineering professor, I agree with all of this.

We may need more engineers, but we need a lot more folks educated to think critically with other ways of knowing the world!

In the best case, they all know and value each other’s ways of knowing the world than many do today.
So many smart people seem to believe that higher ed. should be job training, explicitly. The rise in business (undergraduate) majors is one byproduct of such a perspective. And watching universities cut humanities is another.

I find this approach incredibly shortsighted, and ultimately defeating. 🧵
