I wrote a body horror short story about loneliness, gay cannibalism (sort of), and the human relationship to generative AI (sort of). You can read it here for free:

If I didn't love writing, I wouldn't do it.
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

I wasn't originally going to post about GDT's Frankenstein, but the more I think about it, the more I hate it. I generally like him and have enjoyed a lot of his work, but this one was so egregiously bad that I feel like I'm losing my mind at the positive reviews.

Good literary translation requires understanding (language, culture, genre--on both sides of the translation) and an ability to write well. "AI" can't do that. There are no shortcuts. Treat your work and foreign language readers with the respect they deserve. You won't fool anyone with this.

Finally read @scumbelievable.bsky.social 's BLACK FLAME, by which I mean I tore through it in one sitting and had to stare at a wall for ten minutes afterwards. This one's something special. Long live transgressive art. May we carry on for those of us who didn't make it.

looking back on the cartoons and children’s media that mattered to me when I was young, I say this with absolutely zero irony: I think we need to start scaring the shit out of kids again

Maybe this is the scientist in me speaking, but your creative and personal writing will always be better when you actively engage with surrounding literature in your work.

Not seeing much on Bluesky vs Twitter but St. Elizabeth parish in Jamaica is devastated after Hurricane Melissa made landfall there yesterday.

This is the government’s official support site, which is quite well organized.
#Jamaica needs our support more than ever right now and, never ones to shy away from self-reliance, they’ve set up an officially sanctioned website for recovery donations. The footage of Hurricane Melissa’s destruction in St. Elizabeth coming in from my family is HARROWING.

Let's try something new.

If you donate to a food bank and tell me how much and which one, I'll match your donation.

If it's less than $50, I'll round up.

Tag me, reply here, or DM if you prefer.

Why food banks? Because if we want to survive a general strike, we need to keep people fed.
Now is a really good time to donate to food banks, and do food runs for mutual aid groups. Also, do menstrual product runs.
I wonder how much food theft spikes with desperate people just trying to feed their families. I'm sure there will be a media panic about it.

Finally watched The Devils (1971) to distract from my agonies and it fundamentally altered something in my brain. I haven't stopped thinking about it for the last four days.

Current WIP takes inspiration from Goethe's "Erlkönig", Gretchen Felker-Martin's books Manhunt and Cuckoo, the body horror that found in various werewolf and cannibalism tales (it isn't about werewolves though), and the violent, toxic desire of movies like FEMME and STRANGER BY THE LAKE.
QUESTION THREE

The room includes the media that inspires your writing.
Books. Films. Music. Art.

Share four that inspired your last published horror work or your latest horror WIP.

About to say something that will likely get me in trouble, but I don't think you can chalk this up entirely (or even mostly) to editors being underpaid and overworked (though that is a component, agreed).
weird reading gripe: I'm noticing an uptick in similes and metaphors that don't quite work. it'll be like "bitter as seawater" or "in constant motion, like a cockroach." like, I get the vibe the author is going for but on a mechanical level it doesn't make any sense.
