Beauty is truth, truth beauty.
Beauty awakens the soul to act.

A most enjoyable journey. A bit long, but well worth persisting to the end.🙂
I'm certain Mr. Taylor would blanche at my shelves ordered by genre and height, tallest to shortest, with an odd decorative sculpture or vase on each shelf.
But! More than 25% of my books are poetry, so...
Ok, time to get to know the real me, Bluesky. For every like I get on this post I will provide an increasingly unhinged opinion on bookshelf organization.

A year ago, I wrote a review of Erik Larson's "In the Garden of Beasts," an account of the US Ambassador to Germany's tenure there in the early-mid 30s.

I shared lessons from the account that feel more relevant now than ever.

Here is a snippet of them:

I’m going to say something historians rarely say.

We haven’t been here before.

We haven’t had a near-authoritarian takeover of our government.

Admittedly, we don’t know what comes next.

There’s a wide array of options.

But know that in the US, this is new ground. And none of this is normal.

You ever notice that when Republicans lose elections, they never say things like “maybe the radical right has gone too far” or “perhaps we should stop aligning with actual Nazis” or “it’s time we listen to middle America and consider the possibility that rape may in fact be a bad thing”?

I love this bit of “how to retain your sanity” wisdom from Dr. Fauci. I think we could all use this now.

Here's my fear.

My fear is that this is the Weimar Republic and that Donnie isn't Hitler. That Hitler comes next.

I interpret a semi-colon as a period hitching a ride on top of a comma to cross a river. The comma's sitting a little low in the water, swimming gamely with its mobile tail. We are pausing here in the sentence to watch while the two little guys get safely across.
