oh hello X8 flare

Would you like to direct some happy energized particles this way? Thanks in advance.

I guess I have the unpopular opinion that my earth science colleagues are being weird about piling on a (usually decent?) science communicator about bungling something related to our field.

Yeah, the doubling down on that person's part is baffling, but the pile on ain't going to help.

Hey there, couldn't help but notice your Chicago-sized bulge. 😳

Yes, the Norris uplift anomaly is back (fun!), but uh, phrasing! For more on this I'd recommend a recent Caldera Chronicles article that discusses the history of uplift around the N Yellowstone caldera rim:

Anywho, things are messy. We are both complicit in terrible things while also being subjected to horrors. We perpetrate harm and also experience it.

I'm sorry B_t is at 90 nT? Depending on the timing of if/when the field tips south could make tonight insane.

Up until a few years ago, this cave in Carlsbad National Park could be visited on semi-wild, ranger-led tours. For the moment it is only open for work trips. After reflagging several hundred meters of trail in the cave, I took some time to capture this scene. The scale of NM caves is something else.

I’ve been volunteering at CAVE this past week but it’s been hard to focus. I grew up in a Twin Cities suburb and I am just so terrified for my home.

I just drove from Mammoth to Bozeman through intermittent heavy rain.

It is January 2nd.

Choose your 19th century weird cave formation theory fighter:
⚒️

1) Caves are just natural void spaces in giant coral reefs
2) Caves are the plumbing systems of limey volcanoes
3) Electricity did it because I put an electrode in water and clay and the clay cracked

"Rightside Upside Down"

I spent several weekends surveying and photographing this Wyoming cave over the summer. This was one of the funkier photos I tried to shoot.

It took 7.5 years, but I made it: the PhD is complete. 😮‍💨

I'm experiencing the worst nerve pain of my life—did something stupid in the gym a week ago and after a day of feeling back to normal, this bullshit—but I swear on my life this full dissertation draft will be DONE by the wee hours.

(To my one committee member who is On Here: SOON, and thank you)

Holy shit. Hoping no USGS folks were in the field during this eruption
OMG it just took out one of the distant cameras!!

The quote used in this headline is incredibly ominous if you're not used to the phrase "in the field." 😆

Someday I will learn that the problem of not knowing how to organize my scientific results into a compelling and coherent narrative is solved through the process of writing things down, however disjointed. Because writing *is* thinking.

I WAS BORN TO WATCH WATER BOIL NOT WATCH QGIS CRASH

The final sprint of dissertation is going well, why do you ask?
November 26, 2025 at 3:49 AM
I know the news is newsing but tonight and last night I've sat the camp chair in the backyard and typed out a couple paragraphs on the dissertation while watching auroral glow.

Personally I think I'm as close to winning dissertation writing as possible without submitting.
