Yes, Labour, we call bullshit! The UK is the anomaly, with a vast gulf of inequality between rich and poor. Here's our govt's own headline: "the wealthiest 10% estimated to hold around half of all wealth, primarily in the form of private pensions and property"

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

We didn’t get Books Council Wales funding, it would've meant 5 years of stability. It’s a blow, and it means a rockier road ahead, but our commitment to ambitious, inclusive, working-class publishing stays firm. If you want to help: buy a book, spread the word, or donate:

An incredibly important map: this is how the network of lobbyist influence works. Just this snapshot of the private water companies should tell you how private oil and gas, transport, heath, development, even education - so many aspects of our society - serve private interests.

One of the reasons we need universal basic income plus higher taxes on the rich is to boost the spending power of the bottom 60% and in doing so, reorient our economy around the needs of the majority of people who comprise it. As inequality has increased, our economy has adjusted to meet rich wants.

This is how Rachel Reeves could deliver a progressive budget.

Billions available without increasing the rate of income tax, National Insurance or corporation tax.

Just end some of the perks for a select few, anomalies and abuses. Redistribute to alleviate poverty, better infrastructure.

A huge welcome @russell-moyle.co.uk to @greenparty.org.uk!

Caught a snippet of someone on R4 talking about a 'whole systems failure' in the NHS. Add elected Greens talking about the need for a total systemic overhaul of taxation.

Capitalism is breaking faster than our climate. We need govt to manage a fair transition.

Just spoken at the Roadpeace event for World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

The experiences of bereaved families and injured people must be heard so institutions like the Met and TfL behave with empathy and understanding of the acute trauma and violence involved in road death.
Disappointed that the Met Commissioner does not see the part that a good collision investigation plays in road traffic victims getting justice after a crash.

Someone shared this fascinating simulator from Dorset Council, demonstrating the difficult decisions they make when balancing their budgets: simulator.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk

The short answer, for me: raising taxes works, but councils can't tax progressively, so, over to central govt. #taxthesuperrich

bring in much more revenue than they are paid
their numbers were drastically cut

In 2023-24 HMRC issued 456 penalties to wealthy individuals for £5.8m, 25 prosecuted.

Tax scams designed by accountants, lawyers; five prosecutions in 2023-2024.

Govt taking powers to snoop on benefit claimants' bank accounts; mainly poor, old, sick. Nothing equivalent on tax abuse industry.
Nothing will change until the political system is freed from the clutches of corporations and the super-rich
The law is being used to enforce existing power structures for the benefit of the few
