US oil companies do not want Venezuela’s heavy crude
Trump: "We're going to have our very large United States oil companies go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure and start making money for the country. And we are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so."

Fantastic news for paleontology that the Paleontological Research Institute in Ithaca NY is staying open this year! Intensive fund-raising was successful & enough to pay off the mortgage for their building, helping to preserve this long-standing institution for national & international science. 🧪

Surprise! I’ve just listed several of my 3D-printed volcano tissue box covers in my Etsy store. The volcanoes are scaled models derived from open source lidar, radar and photogrammetry. On the menu this week is Olympus Mons, Erebus, Etna, Lawetlat’la and more!

Nevada Gold Mines JV want to *continue* dewatering their gold mines. This includes 10 open pits and 12 underground mines. Limiting the amount that can be pumped would limit how deep they can mine because it keeps the mines from filling with water.
For geo folks: Barrick and Newmont want to pump groundwater to dewater their gold mines. That lowers groundwater, and groundwater and surface water are connected physically (if not legally).
More details from @danielrothberg.bsky.social, who says Nevada's top water regulator faced pushback from a major gold mining company over raising the possibility of limiting groundwater pumping: invisiblewaters.substack.com/p/the-dismis...

I realize this is a long shot, but does anyone know if educators can still borrow the NASA lunar petrographic sets? I have lesson plans for my spring classes that use them, but I know a lot of staff and programs were cut. If they still can be borrowed, the web contacts are not correct anymore.

This is great, but you know what would be better? Stronger regulations so they don’t get black lung in the first place.
Miners have risked their lives to power our nation for generations. I’m proud to reintroduce legislation to reduce barriers for brave miners and retirees with black lung disease, so they can receive the coverage, benefits, compensation, and legal representation they deserve.

Head Start is a 60-year-old US Department of Health and Human Services program that, among other things, creates inclusive and accessible classrooms for children with disabilities. But those applying for funding were told by the Trump regime to avoid the words "inclusion" and "disability." 🤡

New court documents reveal a list of nearly 200 words or phrases the Trump administration told Head Start programs it does not want to see in their funding requests.

The Trump administration is uniquely cruel and hypocritical in its treatment of coal miners, but I want people to understand that health agencies have been warning about the danger of silica exposure since the 1970s. SO many people—Dems included—have let these workers down and left them to suffer.
December 12, 2025 at 12:11 AM
Coal miners are getting diagnosed with black lung much younger than they used to- as young as their 20s. The silica exposure limit would have saved lives, but now that rule is effectively dead.
Trump says he loves coal miners. His administration is killing them.

A life-saving silica exposure rule meant to curb the black lung crisis in Appalachia is now effectively dead.

@kimkelly.bsky.social reports on this latest betrayal.
The Trump Administration Ramps Up Its War On Coal Miners
A planned rule to set new silica exposure limits—and address Appalachia’s ongoing black lung crisis—has been under continued assault. Now, it looks like it's off the table.
