I agree with the Spike Lee take, that Ryan Coogler created a new genre with Sinners. It's like a cultural mythos movie. You aren't scared, but invested. Even the BBEG is layered in culture. There is gore and action but, to me, it's a story of cultural preservation.

I think horror aims to scare you and sometimes they have supernatural things while thrillers are more so about suspense not really trying to scare you. But i think a horror can also be a thriller. imo
