More than five years ago, in November 2019, grandmother's #garden in #venice was badly hit by #acquaalta (sharing the story from our blog in the comment). Since then, the garden's been making progress, we'll be posting a couple of photos in the days to come🍃

A view of #Venice and the Grand Canal I hadn't seen before🌹
Palazzo Venier dei Leoni (Peggy Guggenheim's former home) and its garden are on the left, and you can make out the Basilica del Redentore on the island Giudecca in the background

Blue skies over #Venice today on the first day of June, Festa della Sensa. And this is how the Giardino del Redentore (monastery #garden on Giudecca island) looked like today, all red poppies and lush vines🍃

La Festa della Sensa will be celebrated soon in #Venice, on June 1st. And the little garden will be dressed festively, all white in early summer: Oleander, fragrant jasmine, chamomile, wild roses, petunia, datura stramonium, and more🍃

A lush corner in #Venice I love, Calle del Forno near the #Biennale area🍃
This year, wisteria blossomed rather early from late March, and should be blooming again by summer solstice. And there will be more wisteria blossoms after the heat, by mid-September.

From mid-April, the Lagoon is covered by pink and white tamarisk blossoms. And now in May, red and white poppies bloom in the salt marshes ("barene").
This one grows in Treporti, facing the northern Lagoon, the islands #Torcello and #Ariano in the distance🍃

When I read history or mythology of the region I search for this map of the Mediterranean that’s tilted by 90 degrees. It somehow makes the Mediterranean Sea look even smaller and is confusing to look at buuuut it forces me to look at the region differently. Source: buff.ly/31JaIig

Did you know a papal conclave took place in Venice? The last conclave outside Rome was held in the island abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, 1799-1800. You can visit the conclave chapel on tours (email ahead) #Conclave2025 www.abbaziasangiorgio.it/visite-guida...

Here's a fun one for Venice lovers. A very accurate map from 1838 made by two Englishmen. If you think Venice doesn't change much you might be in for a surprise. Take a look at what's now via Garibaldi for starters.

This, from The Atlantic and on @lisafdavis.bsky.social: The Voynich is “not imaginary,” Davis said. “It’s an actual object, it exists in space and time, it has a history, it has physical characteristics, and because of that, it has a true story. We just don’t know what that true story is yet.”"
An Intoxicating 500-Year-Old Mystery
The Voynich Manuscript has long baffled scholars—and attracted cranks and conspiracy theorists. Now a prominent medievalist is taking a new approach to unlocking its secrets.
