He went to night school then University, trained as a physicist. Married my mum, brought up 3 kids, all work in public sector.

Under these proposed rules, he would have been deported.

Mahmood understandably attracting flak for hypocrisy, I think it also demonstrates the toxic culture of the Home Office. Minister after Minister goes into that job and in short order becomes radicalised. They are clearly quickly infected by HO anti-immigrant groupthink. Dismantle the Home Office.

As well as being inhumane, Shabana Mahmood’s proposals are the product of muddled thinking.

@sundersays.bsky.social’s excellent 🧵 exposes the confusion and errors of thought.

Being beastly to refugees is not going to help Labour beat Reform. Quite the reverse.
The question of what works to defuse asylum is a contested debate: about language across politics (what approaches duck the challenge & what approaches stoke the anxiety, fear and prejudice) & about policy issues of the analysis & response that can gain control, maintain compassion, challenge hatred

The stupidity of Farage’s latest ‘plan’ is staggering.
Claiming they’d save British taxpayers money by ripping up international commitments and starting a trade war with Europe is the puerile foot-stamp of a party that uses prejudice as policy. Ruinous nonsense.

Starmer’s anti-asylum policies show how utterly clueless he is about the right-wing media’s role in politics.

He’s trying to fix a “problem” contrived by Farage, GB News and The Telegraph. He’ll never win, because ultimately he’s fighting a ghost – he’s fighting something that doesn’t really exist

Ps. We will not be a success story without immigration.

Important time. This was a few weeks after the Skripal attack when May called out Putin, and Johnson went scuttling off without his security detail to meet Putin confidante* Alexander Lebedev in Umbria and plotted with Temerko to topple May

* by then he was aiding Putin’s puppet regime in Crimea
Just as he was advising Epstein, Bannon was advising Johnson on how to topple May “Today we are going to see if Boris Johnson tries to overthrow the British government. He’s going to give a speech in the Commons.” www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019...

🚨This is not what I expect from a Labour government

Labour will be taking the population for absolute mugs if they try to claim that's equivalent to no income tax rises.

Probably won't stop them. Their messaging is diabolical.

Johnson, more than Farage and any other single person, destroyed the UK. Mostly through his appallingly and lastingly damaging Brexit, but also, like Trump, through inflicting his dishonesty and ignorance on us and encouraging rampant corruption at the highest levels of govt.
This was an early Boris Johnson cock-up, when he was still Foreign Secretary, and a sign of awful things yet to come

I knew enough about him, through a mutual friend and a close encounter, to warn people before the Brexit vote and again before the leadership election and the 2019 GE. Who listened?

- champion Trump…
