If you feel bad about not getting a grant, worth keeping in mind ESRC's success for:

new investigator is ~14%

secondary data analysis scheme is ~9%.

These are on par with acceptance rates for the most competitive journals in the field...

Oof. Listening to @bbcradio4.bsky.social 6:30 comedy slot for the first time in - oh - decades. Good to see the quality hasn't changed. How can it be so consistently terrible?

This is why you don't design curricula around "jobs of the future".

We can't predict the future but we do know what general skills and knowledge will be valuable whatever job you do.

Coming back from my West Kent Orwell Odyssey. All the workhouses he stayed in have become upmarket (and sometimes gated) housing developments, and the hop farm he worked at a vineyard. Time marches on!

Setting out for a mini-tour of West Kent based around George Orwell's time hop-picking and workhousing. So here's a challenge for all you #Blueskyers: which UK county has the most literary connections?

This week's local, volunteer-led museum: the museum of freemasonry in Canterbury. A lot of displays of men in aprons and, bizarrely, plastic food. And guides insisting they're not secretive. All a bit surreal.

So much to unpick here. Breakfast sandwiches? A steak for lunch - without breaking to cook it? Is it raw? Or does the 'lunch for wimps' ideology only apply to those with hired help? And who's making her touch moist bread? So, so much to unpick.
