This week on the blog: Hoplites! We're taking a crack at explaining the long-running debate over the nature and significance of the ancient Greek heavy infantryman, the hoplite, and the phalanx in which he (mostly) fought.

This week (and next) we’re looking at hoplites, the heavy infantry of the ancient Greek poleis in the (early? mid? late?) Archaic and Classical periods, into the Hellenistic. In particular, I…

Imagine an EU-wide government shut down in its 6th week leading to serious disruption of air traffic. We would not hear the end of it in Anglophone media.
Look forward to more grand declations about how Europeans must emulate an America whose government is in the sixth week of shutdown and now can't provide safe air travel

Another Professor, this time an Italian one, and another bunch of stupid pro-Russia BS.

"When a Russian missile hits a civilian building in Kharkiv and kills civilians, that's not the goal".

Our information system is rotten to the core. Russian propaganda is everywhere.

Bothsideism on Ukraine is even worse than being honestly pro-russian. The only imperialism I see here from "the West" is a country who wanted to be free and integrated in the EU and no longer a muscovite province. Putin could get his dirty hands off Ukraine and the war could be over in days.

My goodness, this poem. A beautiful, savage, blunt explanation of why we study war and conflict and also why military history is not and should not be just 'for the boys.'

The poem is moving in its unwillingness to whitewash the many tombs of war, as we should too should be unwilling.

At @leadstories.com we've been debunking a stream of these. Seems like a network operating out of Vietnam churning out dozens of versions of the same stories using the same AI prompts but with different celebrities and locations inserted.
Someone just sent me a bunch of examples of these. Apparently the site is flooded with them.

There's gotta be a story behind all of these.

Not a single elected dem is even going to come remotely close to what Lee and a whole bunch of elected GOP officials did. They’re all going to express sympathy and condemn political violence and we’re of course going to get a billion different “both sides” articles in the coming weeks
Oh, is Mike Lee moralizing about his hatred of political violence now?

Two Democratic legislators were shot, along with their spouses.

Even their dog was shot.

One had to dive on top of their child to protect them.

Trump didn’t attend the funeral. There was no widespread condemnation of political violence.

The culture must change and gun control is long overdue
For everyone saying political violence has no place in this country…

Remember two Democratic legislators were shot in Minnesota just this year.

And America shrugged and moved on.
