US administrations have always played a double game. Exhorting Europe to take more responsibility for its own defense... but always making sure Europe stayed sufficiently divided not to become a unified rival. Trump has blown up this game, presenting us with a unique opportunity.
Not only bringing in some much-needed (and well-supported) optimism, but also lots of interesting aspects on how #Trump might yet get a place in history, as the guy who managed to unite quite the range of Europeans...
If you think that Europe is doomed, you’re not paying attention.

Wrote a recap of the latest developments and call me a hopeless Europtimist but I think Europe+ (including Canada) isn’t doing too bad in terms of offering Ukraine an actual perspective for the future. With or without the US.
Imagine being a sane American and having to face this fact. It is so sad.
The country we grew up in is gone
I suspect the vast majority of those Americans assume that one day they can simply say 'reset' to us, and all will be well.
It won't be. America has never ever threatened a European democracy with invasion. Until now. We are in a new era.

A joke for the history buffs:

Germany’s satirical newspaper @der-postillon.com titles: “Vienna Academy of the Arts offers Trump admission as a student — They don’t want to get blamed again“
January 18, 2026 at 1:56 PM
US opinion makers have been talking Europe into the ground for decades. Irresolute ('muddling through'), lazy (long holidays), boring ('those speeches...'), declining ('a museum'), feminine ('from Venus').
Is it on the basis of that caricature that Americans now think they can just push us over?
“For all its pointless absurdity, Mr Trump’s conflict with Europe over #Greenland may come to be seen as the moment when America’s leadership of the West was profoundly put into doubt.”

My latest for The @economist.com.

Basically the French dod a fuck-tonne more to support Britain in the Falklands War than the US did.

And the British government was incredibly grateful for that.

But Americans who want to save the alliance with Europe must have no illusions about how bad a condition this transatlantic partnership is in.

At least this US administration is honest: we will keep blackmailing the Europeans as long as they let us.
WELKER: Is Greenland or NATO more vital to natl security?

BESSENT: That's obviously a false choice

W: Not to European leaders

B: They will come around & understand they need to be under the US security umbrella. What would happen in Ukraine if the US pulled support? The whole thing would collapse

Interested! As much as I it like here on Bluesky, the US government can still gain access to everything here, and I am supporting US tech when I really, really want a European tech eco-sphere to develop. Launching this month.
We'll soon have @eurosky.social as an alternative to Bluesky.

We already have many Mastodon instances to choose from (I'm on mas.to).

But, for greater impact, we need to target US Big Tech and US financial services.

Today is a great moment to cancel your #Netflix subscription. Don’t forget to enter ‘Trump’ as the reason.

Feeling powerless? Every one of your spending decisions counts.

Yes yes yes. Show this to each and every European still claiming that Trump is an aberration. Canada sees things so much clearer (of course it would, it is closer-by and even more under threat than we are in Europa)
Sums it up.

Europeans, Canadians and Mexicans can't trust America again until America visibly changes in strategic approach and cultural outlook towards the world. Americans can't afford their hubris anymore.

Free up your life by cancelling Netflix and thereby supporting Greenland. In the drop-down menu choose as ground for cancelling... 'Trump'.
Wouldn't it be a lovely message this week if a million Europeans did this? We are their second biggest market so they'd notice, at Netflix HQ.
Ending Netflix subscription. Reason: Trump

"the future of Greenland is a matter to be determined by Denmark and by the Greenlandic people...Respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States is non-negotiable."

Ireland is next EU president.

Cancel as many US Big Tech subscriptions as you can.
Every little bit helps. While they may all but ignore (international) law, these corporations do look at their bottom line.
1 x Dropbox = €240/annum.
1 x Office 365 = €156/annum.
1 x Disney+ = €110/annum
1 x HBO Max = €100/annum

Who does better.

So you want to hit America hard because this is the only way to stop Trump from wrecking Europe? Do read this awesome, superbly argued and illuminating piece on 'anticircumvention' by Cory Doctorow. Europe could screw the US so hard, it's encouraging: pluralistic.net/2026/01/01/3...

If on average every European diverted 100 euros in spending away from American products and services, that's €50 billion right there. That's gotta hurt.
I did replace my AirPods (which were ready for replacement) with Sennheiser earbuds rather than new AirPods. That's the easiest bit.

Imagine we had well-established pan-European media pursuing this: how to dismantle US Big Tech's extraordinary economic privileges in Europe? Which political parties/ groupings are helping, which aren't and why?
We need to mobilize simultaneous political pressure across the continent's parliaments.
Yes. Ending the excessive legal protections of US Big Tech is obviously the first step in Europe’s retaliation.
