River scientist-- fluvial geomorphology & connections with all else fluvial and riparian: sediment, complexity, beavers, vegetation, ice, boulders, lakes and more! Stream restoration & communicating research. Associate professor at Umeå Uni, Sweden
New article alert!
Is there always longitudinal connectivity in rivers? What about those fragmented by lakes and semi-alluvial reaches? We found extremely low connectivity in paraglacial regions based on continuity of channel width changes and in riparian vegetation.

Disrupted geomorphic and biotic stream connectivity in paraglacial regions - Communications Earth & Environment
Natural disconnectivity in paraglacial river networks disrupts downstream trends in channel width and riparian plant richness, as revealed by two catchments with local controls on channel width and species dispersal.

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

A wildfire swept through Wyoming’s Medicine Bow Forest in 2020, yet one green oasis remained: a beaver-engineered wetland. 🔥

Scientist @emilyfairfax.bsky.social is proving what nature has long known: beavers are the solution.

Dear Democratic Party: why are you not screaming this from every rooftop? Why are you not holding press conferences with these poor fired people - putting a face on what the richest man is destroying?
“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”
Yesterday many thousands of federal employees were terminated. This is a Reddit thread for federal employees that got laid off.

Hear me out —

If parents call colleges freaked about their FAFSA data being leaked, schools may have to issue statements — which would reach a whole lot more families about how warped this is.

Organizing isn’t always calling electeds. Sometimes it’s just calling people with a bigger megaphone.

Re-posting to encourage everyone to reply to this to be added yourself & suggest other — early & senior career, from the northern hemisphere, global south, East & West— fluvial researchers! I def don’t know all the fluvial researchers out there (or who’s on bluesky yet). There’s room for >100 more 😊
I started a ‘fluvial geomorphology & related river science’ starter pack for those of you joining us at Bluesky &and those wanting to build the community! Let me know if you want to be added— I’m sure I’ve missed lots of people.
