Bitch, Asheville is a blue college town and the county has gone blue for decades. I am so sick of this “if I pretend disasters only happen to red areas, it means I’m safe because I’m properly on the left!” No. You’re not safe. That’s why we save everybody.

If you'd asked me five years ago if I'd talk about insurance in a climate class AND THE STUDENTS WOULD LIKE IT, I'd say you were nuts.

I taught a new class on climate risk this fall. One of the things I emphasized was the role of insurance in our economy and how climate change is blowing it up.

In the end of semester evaluations, the students really liked learning about insurance.

For a preview of what's to come from AVs, look to San Francisco.

As ex-SFMTA CEO @jeffreytumlin.bsky.social explained here, affluent people love Waymos. But they muck up transport networks by blocking streets and obstructing transit.

What’s good for individual riders may not be good for the city.
What Robotaxis Brought San Francisco
Outgoing transit agency head Jeffrey Tumlin reflects on how self-driving cars from Waymo, Cruise and Zoox affected the city’s other transportation modes.

Large SUVs and utes are 82% more likely to kill children in collisions- 44% more likely to kill adult pedestrians or cyclists. They damage our roads and add to air pollution, harming our health.
Pedestrian fatalities reach 17-year-high. This trend could be why
Fifty-one pedestrians had been killed on the state’s roads this year as of Saturday – the most in any calendar year since 2008.
