🚨 NEW in @bjpols.bsky.social : When Partygate hit Westminster, trust in Scottish politicians increased. Our experiments reveal a "contrast effect" - scandals at one level can make the other look better by comparison. Who lost most trust in Westminster? Scottish unionists. Read now #OpenAccess 👇

Quick thread on the BBC and the political and societal significance of recent developments:

One of the main reasons the UK has historically been so much less polarised than the US, is that Britain has a shared source of information, consumed and trusted by most people regardless of their politics.

Here is some hard evidence that Mamdani actually managed to bring young voters to the polls. 18-29 year olds voted at similar rates than 40-49 year olds.
Youth turnout, 2021 to 2025 (and 2025 as pct of 2021):

NJ Gov 20% to 29% (+145%)
VA Gov 27% to 34% (+126%)
NYC Mayor 11.1% to 41.3% (+372%)

In an ongoing project, we ask which countries citizens prefer as benchmarks for policy decisions.

Pilot data from the UK show that Denmark is ranked as one of the most preferred reference countries, particularly in relation to migration policy.

How can you go on morning TV, knowing that this question is coming and your best answer is "I don't follow American politics closely". Desperate stuff from someone in the mix to succeed Starmer.
Labour frontbench doesn't know what it thinks!

Try

The question to sort out is how much of the impressive Dem sweep was a result of differential voter turnout that might not carry as strongly into 2026 and 2028 and how much of it signals a sustainable repudiation of Trump in the form of the mobilization of new voters and voters changing sides.

I still remember the 2013 NYC mayoral race and especially the chaotic Dem primary when I was living in Hamilton Heights ... anyone remember Anthony Weiner? Still trying to forget that episode. The past years were harsh for progressive New Yorkers/most New Yorkers. Delighted for my friends today.
