Trains are being nationalised in the UK. Didn't know that would also apply to airport trains. This whole process flying a bit under the radar it seems? This should be a major policy win for the left, but the government is mostly busy talking about something else.

It‘s a sign of the times we are living in that I‘m impressed by a statement from a centrist President that calls out xenophobic violence and reaffirms liberal values. Good on you, President Dan.

Just came across this case a couple of days ago while on a hike with family. Landau, the wealthy picturesque town in South-Western Germany close to where I grew up, voted to retain street names associated with the NS-regime:63% on a turnout of almost 70% (concurrence with federal election).

Just wanted to give a shout-out to @stnairport.bsky.social staff who took such good care of us at 1.30am yesterday after our 3-year old had a relatively minor, but very bloody accident. The ambulance team were absolutely brilliant, but that extends to staff at the gate and customs officers.

Have been reading Navalny's memoir and remembered that there is a gem of a field experiment published in @jepsjournal.bsky.social, which took place in the 2013 Moscow mayoral election, the last election Putin "allowed" Navalny to contest: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

While Romania's current budget deficit is unsustainable, the debt ratio is below the European average. There is good evidence that cutting public spending and especially spending on public services fuels the radical right. The take-away from Sunday's election really cannot be to cut public services.

Looks like a run-off between radical right Simion and the centre-right in Romania (exit polls below). Uncertainty about whether Crin Antonescu (PNL, supported also by PSD and UDMR) or Nicusor Dan (independent, supported by parts of USR) will enter the second round.

Also, some story that a German guy who got elected mayor of a major Romanian city and elected to lead a major Romanian party is now disposing of that party's Presidential candidate. In any case, here is a photo from 2019 when I travelled to Timisoara trying to understand what was happening there.

Apropos of nothing, I also just cast my postal vote. It’s without a doubt the most important election Germany has seen since reunification.🗳️

Some take-always from the results below: 1) Forming a government will be very difficult 2) USR on 12% can’t be happy. They would have expected to do better in Lasconi’s shadow. 3) the radical right had a good night again yesterday:AUR on 18%, SOS on 7%, POT on 6% 4) PSD will be happy they came first

Fantastic, bold and brave field experiment by Mironov and Petrachkova out in jepsjournal.bsky.social: “Going Negative in Autocracy: A Field Experiment at the Moscow Mayoral Elections”. Conducted in 2013,
I’m so glad this saw the light of day. Worth your time: www.cambridge.org/core/journal... 👇

Just went to a coffee place at 8.30 and ordered an espresso … the barista looks at me… and hands me a Red Bull on the house. 🤕 How’s your morning / day going? Also, as a recent migrant from the other place - hello, everyone!
