Who else brings several potential books with them when they travel for the holidays because you have no idea what mood you'll be in from day to day?

The Carnahan Barnacle. Once it get stucks to the hull of your local politics, it's incredibly difficult to dislodge.

Unemployment numbers highest in four years but the media will chase the Wilse story. Funny how the two coincide today...

Really concerned that Duluth is considering getting rid of its amazing ore boat shaped public library downtown. A magical space for me as a kid when I'd abscond to the "big city" to stay with my spinster aunts.

The list of things we are supposed to quit grows longer every day:

Alcohol
Sugar
Milk
Driving
Napping
Carbs

The only replacements being offered are weed, pharmaceutical and xenophobia/racism.

I'm sorry, but as an editor, prose like this is an immediate desk reject.
The breathtaking, audacious confidence of this passage…

You’re telling me you came up in political journalism of the 2010s and 20s and *never once* worried about job security? Really???

That’s… diagnosable.

Cool idea for a press or a series of shorts -- collecting important pieces by prominent web-based voices
There’s so much good writing published all the time across the internet, and often it feels like even the ones that do well circulate for a couple of days and then are gone. I’m hoping to more regularly share older pieces (say, at least six months old) that meant something to me. Starting with this:
I think about this @zunguzungu.bsky.social blog from June of 2024 all the time; I hadn't actually reread it until today, and it's even better than I remembered. Maybe it's just that I'm now the parent of a two-year-old, trying to do that in the most true and considered way I can, but in any case:

Cloud Dancer? White shade? Technically not a color at all?
Pantone’s 2026 color of the year is technically not a color at all — meet Cloud Dancer, the first-ever white shade to receive the designation from the world’s color authority.
Pantone makes a surprising choice for its 2026 color of the year

Maybe the best single thing I've ever done for my mom was to move my dad into elderly nursing care for his final years. Trump during his second term constantly reminds of me of my dad in the months before he moved to the veteran's home.
Trump on his cognitive test: “I'm a smart person, not a stupid person…I got every question right, and these are tough questions. These are questions that I would say 99% of the people that I'm talking to right now, meaning…the fake news, would not do well in those exams.”
