And it was very clear at the time how utterly insane the majority of this stuff was. It’s hard to explain quite how unpleasant it is to wonder whether you are going crazy, because you can see what’s happening is wildly different to what’s in every paper, on every broadcast, at astonishing intensity.
So, to recap: an invented Jewish-sounding persona (Gordstein), created by a non-Jew, charged a jewish actress with antisemitism, because she had shared an article by a left-wing Jewish academic, which argued that non-Jews telling scare stories about antisemitism was itself a form of antisemitism. This same non-Jewish activist would play a key role in amplifying the astroturf Stop Funding Fake News campaign, also led by non-Jews, that would implicitly accuse media outlets of being antisemitic for interviewing and recording the views of Jewish people who questioned aspects of the 'antisemitism crisis. That astroturf campaign was run by an organisation established by the Labour Together Project. I contacted Margolyes for this book to get her response to the Gordstein complaint. In an entertaining potty-mouthed tour of world politics, Margolyes bemoaned the conflation of anti-Zionism and antisemitism. On Gordstein she was amusingly frank: T'm an old cunt and I know what's what, and if he thinks I'm an antisemite he is speaking out of his bottom:

This one guy and his mates were the source for a massive chunk of all that terrifying media coverage you read, and that’s been public knowledge since about 2021. It is IMO helpful for the more lib audience of Bluesky to hear about this, because you better believe standards have not improved since.
Labour Party which showed that LAAS' spokesperson and one of its most well-known activists, Euan Philipps, had created a fake persona called David Gordstein, which many readers would take to be a Jewish name. Philipps is not Jewish. Philipps admitted to Al Jazeera that he was David Gordstein but insisted that 'he never claimed to be Jewish when doing sol David Gordstein, as shown below, would play a material role in the success of the astroturf campaign that was incubated by the Labour Together Project. Philipps remained a prominent member and spokesperson of LAAS even after his Gordstein persona was exposed. Previously unseen documents from the Labour Party show that the Gordstein persona was used to make hundreds of complaints of antisemitism to the Labour Party between 2017 and 2021. The reports are detailed, but perhaps the most important feature was the number of times the persona was used to accuse left-wing jews of antisemitism. The outrageous story of Gordstein's complaint about the elderly Jewish party member Riva Joffe, which led to the party investigating her on her death bed, is dealt with in Part Three below. One of the more absurd Gordstein complaints was directed against Miriam Margolyes, the idiosyncratic national treasure and garlanded jewish actress who played Professor Pomona Sprout in two of the film adaptations of Harry Potter. One of Margolyes' allegedly antisemitic acts, according to 'Gordstein", was to use her Facebook profile to share an impassioned article written in 2019 by the highly regarded Jewish social anthropologist and London School of Economics professor David Graeber. Graeber challenged aspects of the mainstream narrative alleging a 'crisis' of antisemitism in the Labour Party." He argued that the way the Labour Party antisemitism crisis' had been covered was itself antisemitic, because it generated unjustified 'rancour, panic and resentment' that 'creates THE FRAUD 61

Backing up The Argument in NYT/Siena, Gen X still has an astonishing 49% approval for Trump (!), while Boomers have dipped to 42%.

Gen X is currently tracking at 12 pts to the right of the electorate on the generic ballot. Now 9 pts to the right of Boomers, which has to be the largest gap ever.

I have been warning you for the best part of a year that generative Al has no killer apps and had no way of justifying its valuations (February), that generative Al had already peaked (March), and I have pleaded with people to consider an eventuality where the jump from GPT-4 to GPT-5 was not significant, in part due to a lack of training data (April). I shared concerns in July that the transformer-based-architecture underpinning generative Al was a dead end, and that there were few ways we'd progress past the products we'd already seen, in part due to both the limits of training data and the limits of models that use said training data. In August, I summarized the Pale Horses of the Al Apocalypse - events, many that have since come to pass, that would signify that the end is indeed nigh - and again added that GPT-5 would likely "not change the game enough to matter, let alone [add] a new architecture to build future (and more capable) models on." Throughout these pieces I have repeatedly made the point that - separate to any lack of a core value proposition, training data drought, or unsustainable economics - generative Al is a dead end due to the limitations of probabilistic models that hallucinate, where they authoritatively state things that aren't true. Did a small rant today on the @wasp.sh Discord wrt. to what impact are the AI assistants and agents are actually having in the software industry right now.
I have two main opinions here: It seems AI usage shifts the bulk of dev time from writing code to reviewing it. For one-man projects this is fine because you sometimes don't feel the need to review your code, or spend the same amount of time working on it, but with something "working" way earlier, and more iteration (incidentally, this is how designing a solution always should be, iteratively). For bigger companies with established processes, you're involving more people earlier in the process. So maybe the individual gains in dev time are offset by the collective losses in review time. (This is basically the same effect a Jr. Dev has in a team, but without the ROI of them becoming a Sr. Dev sometime in the future.) IMO big gains of productivity from AI come from the LLMs bridging or bypassing tech debt. It says so in the article you linked it: "You probably wouldn't even know where to go, but we're going to ignore all that.". Not knowing where to go is a synonym for architectural tech debt. And they're doing the equivalent of paying for a loan by taking out another, bigger loan. It's getting you out of the immediate problem but giving you more debt to work with in the future (as the code that's being created is just being put on top of the old debt and getting it more interlinked). Meanwhile, leaner codebases are seeing way more modest productivity gains from agents, but nonetheless going faster and not putting more messy code on their shoulders. So all in all, we're looking at a Senior Developer shortage in a few years, because companies are not investing in the Junior-to-Senior pipelines anymore. And for those Senior developers, they're gonna be left with byzantinian codebases that will be extremely difficult to work with. So let's all get ready for the software quality crisis coming in about 10years. (Long enough for the OpenAIs and Googles of the world to have made their money though, which is the only important thing)
