Just an Italian nerd who spends too much time searching for his country's tornadoes - Part of PRETEMP

HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE!
Italy is, as of now, the European country (and really, correct me if I'm wrong, the only country IN THE WORLD outside the U.S.) with more than two confirmed F5/EF5/IF5 tornadoes. @essl-ecss.bsky.social did the hardest part of the job, but I'm happy to have been of help

2025 was characterized by several destructive #earthquakes. Large ones in Myanmar (with the first fault rupture ever recorded on video) and Afghanistan (Kunar Provinces) claimed 1000 fatalities. Other earthqukes also caused huge destruction.

May 2026 be a better year for everybody. Happy new year.

I put together a few maps and stats on tornadoes across the U.S. and Canada in 2025. Both countries saw above-average tornado activity this year.

I forgot to put a legend on the tornado damage surveys. Just imagine the tornado rating increases from cool to warm.

Insane anticyclonic drillbit action, this will need some serious surveying tomorrow

After 25 years of life, I finally managed to get a tornado! And on Christmas on all days! Incredible what the atmosphere can produce. In the coming days I'll see if I manage to tell you if it was harmless or a devastating son of a gun that deserves 0 respect. Happy holidays!

Say hello to Italy's 98th tornado for this year, an anticyclonic (fourth of this kind this year...) landfalling waterspout in Campania. Video via Angelo Concilio

Finished up the site investigation at Seaford. A clear damage track around 45m wide was found along a 1.3km path originating from the seafront. A clear WS/tornado. Further analysis will take place before a damage rating is awarded.

Only one mangled trampoline found

With a bit of luck (on our part, not who has been impacted) we managed to find at least a preliminary path for yesterday's tor: >6 km through the countryside after causing some damage to properties. IF1 the rating. Updates will come only if new photos come up or Google Earth blesses us (like always)

New video of the tornado in Apulia from yesterday. So far we managed to find a 1.5 km long path in the populated area, but NOBODY documented the countryside north of there. A 5-7+ km path is very plausible

Today Apulia has never been this Great Plains-esque. Insane supercell and tornado in the Manduria area (we're working on the damage... frustrating is quite reductive). Videos by Fausto Perretti and Giuseppe Mauro (below)

So, after ECSS2025, last weekend I took part in Italy's Meteorology Festival and, for some unknown reason, the audience thought that my oral presentation on my work on historical Italian tornadoes was the best one among so much high quality work

Finally we managed to finish all the tornadoes! One more was found on November 21st near Ravenna (a rarity for this time of year) and most importantly, two more landfalling waterspouts in Genoa from the November 15th outbreak bringing the total of that day to seven!

After compiling the most recent tornadoes in Italy of just before-to-while I was away, this has become a truly record year. And we still have a few events to confirm and evaluate + all the uncertain cases. Wow!

So thankful to have taken part in this #ecss2025 edition. So many great experts to meet, so much interesting research to look at and listen to... Utrecht was such a nice city to go around! As my first travel abroad and my first conference, not bad at all!

Hurricane Melissa produced the fastest hurricane winds to be recorded by a dropsonde, verified by reviewing data at NSF NCAR! Hurricane Melissa’s 252 mph wind gust surpassed the previous record from Typhoon Megi over the Western Pacific in 2010, where a dropsonde measured wind gusts of 248 mph.

Really enjoying my #ecss2025 experience here in Utrecht, between the amazing talks and meeting all the various scientists from all over the world! Cannot wait to continue!
