Just an Italian nerd who spends too much time searching for his country's tornadoes - Part of PRETEMP

A second tornado formed in the Catania plain and struck the city's industrial area, military base and civil airport, killing 3 and injuring at least 98 more. Once again, buildings were destroyed and cars lofted and tossed, trees were also severely damaged (same thing rating-wise)

timing via one last source, which hopefully will lead to a better understanding of this tragic and forgotten event

...fully in line with the reported times of occurrence. The two reconstructible paths are quite aligned though and would be separated by just an unpopulated area from where even now it would be difficult to find tornado paths without surveys. This upcoming Winter I hope to resolve at least the...

Oh the research is absolutely on point! Unfortunately it's hard to get the public to understand it and increase the awareness...

Good for you! Unfortunately we haven't been so lucky, even after some higher profile events. As a matter of fact, I might dare to say that down here is getting worse. After a week most people forget those higher impact events even happened

Unfortunately Italy is part of the "Tornadoes only occur in America, we have the smaller phenomena which is different" movement that Europe so proudly keeps alive

Plus the fact that we have a barely functioning (bad reflectivity) radar network and a basically non existent weather service, ESPECIALLY thunderstorm and tornado wise, it makes the next imminent disaster all the more doom-like

That's why I put "maybe" in brackets, unfortunately we're no different, if not for the fact that we had mostly close calls since the '70s. The 2015 IF4 didn't open any eyes at all (and even with how tragic it was, it still was a close call for what could have been a major disaster)

...it will (maybe) open a lot of eyes. And it's just a matter of time

Better information on this event is still lacking, but it's likely a strong to violent tornado: homes and farms were completely destroyed, a steel power truss was ripped from its anchoring and tossed 50 meters and grass was scoured from fields

If you ever want to see it, it's exposed at the Oslo National Museum: www.nasjonalmuseet.no//en/collecti...
