I want to create some kind of Bluesky Catholic Bible study. Not sure what exactly that will look like, but if you're interested, let's talk about it.
I'm very sorry to hear this. He was an insightful writer and observer. May he rest in the peace of Christ.
Rest in peace, John...and thank you ✝️

John died on January 22, after a lengthy battle with cancer. The legendary Vatican beat reporter and Church affairs analyst was 61 years old. He is survived by his wife, Elise Ann Allen, who is Crux’s senior Rome correspondent. cruxnow.com/church/2026/...
John L. Allen Jr, 1965-2026
John L. Allen Jr. was a force of nature, certainly as a journalist who was not only our principal but also a model for us, whose counsel and whose company we already and forever shall sorely miss.

Pick up the nearest book. Turn to page 42, and post the second sentence.

"The lake of fire that swallows death and the underworld is also ready for those whose names are not written in the book of life."
Pick up the nearest book. Turn to page 42, and post the second sentence. [Coincidentally, that is the page I am on.]

“Not a trace of the leopard was found for ten weeks.”

“The hold of a modern ocean liner would easily accommodate one of the earlier steamships, and room would still be left for other freight."

There is a lot of truth in this. And I say that as someone who might be considered a theological conservative, depending on how those lines are drawn. My heroes in Catholic theology - Ratzinger, Newman, JPII, Von Speyr - are on another planet from the integralist, misogynist nonsense now popular...
At least in theology, we’ve broken into camps and ignore each other a lot. It’s not great. The right suffers most, imho, because their ideas have become much more harmful.

I mean I hate a lot of liberal Catholic theology but I’m not being persecuted. They just scowl or make me feel sad, max.

First two episodes of Starfleet Academy have been 🔥. I love the look of it, Holly Hunter is great, and it's an absolute treat to have @robertpicardo.bsky.social back as the Doctor again. I was nervous going in, but so far this show is a delight. Can't wait for more!

Accidentally was on the "discover" feed instead of "following" for three minutes and now I need a strong drink followed by a nap.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is why Jordan is the GOAT. What he did on the court wasn't just impressive. It was beautiful.
January 13, 1996: Chicago's Michael Jordan with an over-the-shoulder lead pass to Scottie Pippen for a breakaway slam.

Jordan had 48 PTS (18-28 FG/5-7 3P)/10 REB and Pippen had 20 PTS/10 AST in the Bulls' 120-93 win at Philadelphia. Sharone Wright had 22 PTS/8 REB for the 76ers.

Woke: I will love you even if you don't agree with me.

Bespoke: I will love you even though you are obstinate and willfully misinformed.

God chooses us from varied places and backgrounds to become a company of friends, spending our whole life abiding in him and giving ourselves up to the attraction of his glory.

Justice will never be fully attained unless people see in the poor person, who is asking for help in order to survive, not an annoyance or a burden, but an opportunity for showing kindness and a chance for greater enrichment.

My first assignment in ministry was in Salisbury. It's hard to imagine such things happening there. But this is the world we now live in.
Wednesday morning, 7 ICE agents in Salisbury, MD, smashed in windows & violently dragged a mother out of her car while she was dropping her daughter off at elementary school.

These abusive tactics are absolutely unacceptable.

ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility

In this Ohio town, it was tradition: Latin mass, biscuits and gravy at Bob Evans, and then down to the old marina to shoot a bunch of fishermen and claim they were running drugs. But now the woke mob wants to take all that away.

The Lord helpeth them that are fallen; * the Lord careth for the righteous.

The Lord careth for the strangers; he defendeth the fatherless and widow: * as for the way of the ungodly, he turneth it upside down.
