i started this fic in 2024 which means i've had this chapter, specifically, rattling around in my brain like a ball bearing for a FULL YEAR.

“Fuck,” Ed rasps. “Fuck, mate, will you get over here? Need to tell you something.” The anxiety is pouring off of Stede in visible torrents. His face is pinched, and he’s standing too taut, too straight. He does as Ed asks and heads over to the couch, but he perches gingerly on the edge like he’s sitting on a bed of nails. He looks like Ed’s about to announce that he’s dying. Or that Ed’s about to break up with him. Or that Ed’s dying to break up with him. “Do something different with your face,” Ed demands, in a choked-up rush. “Please, mate. You look like a kicked cat.” Stede pants a terrified laugh. He does not do anything different with his face. It’s an echo of the other night, when Ed had demanded that Stede stop looking at him. Not a very nice echo, though. Stede’s still a ghastly shade of white, one that seems to be hedging into green territory. Fuck. Not good. Ed’s gotta just– He snatches frantically for a hand, and he feels the tremor of Stede’s bones against his own. He squeezes hard; hard as he fucking can without breaking anything. “Mate, I’m– I just– I like you, man. I really, really fucking like you, okay?” Stede does something different with his face. It’s a welcome change. His jaw releases. Colour seeps back into his cheeks. He lets free a sigh that sounds like it weighs more than a fucking Buick. “Oh,” he says, so relieved that it comes with the slight titter of a laugh. “That’s– Ed, that’s…not exactly news to me. I mean, I think we’ve already established–” “Might be a bit in love with you, even.”

There was a new Orville Peck song out last week, so we got celebratory new art! A digital drawing of western AU Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach from Our Flag Means Death. They’re sitting in the back of a rusty. Old green pickup truck. Ed’s back is leaning against the cab. He has on knee pulled up towards his torso and the other extended. Sometimes I remember worrying that I was embarrassing when I started sharing my fanart. I fell so hard & so fast for our pirates. Then a pro comic artist I really look up to just out of the blue told me my OFMD stuff was "beautiful work". It was like he knew I needed to hear it right at that moment.
