what I love about this golden shell unearthed in Romania is that it shows how in 800CE people in this region had detailed knowledge of nautilus, an animal that lives almost 10,000 kilometers away in the warm waters of southeast Asia 🧪

Researchers studying sediment cores from Greece and the Aegean Sea have found the oldest known evidence of lead pollution in the environment dating to around 5,2kya

That’s 1,200 years older than the previous earliest recorded lead pollution, which was found in Serbia.⚱️🏺

Love this! And replicas of these should be sold at the Museum of London and elsewhere. I’d totally buy a few! 🏺
Some things never change!

A 2,000 year-old Roman souvenir pen with a joke inscription roughly equivalent to:

“I went to Rome and all I got you was this cheap pen!" 😂

Dated to about 70 AD, this iron stylus pen was found in London during excavations by MOLA. 📷 MOLA

Ever wonder what snow in the swamp would look like? This is 5 miles into the Louisiana swamps in the Atchafalaya basin... it's unreal... having lived down there for the first 28 years of my life, we never saw anything like this.

Smashed records.

If, like me, you miss science twitter of yesteryear and the shit posting and silly/funny arguments, then this is for you 🧪
Just had a mini argument with another professor about “what is a map” and whether a scale bar and north arrow are always required. #CartographySky #MappyChat #maps

I’ve been feeling a bit stale lately so I decided to really mix it up and try something different. I’m not sure it will end up going anywhere, though, as it doesn’t really feel like my vibe. #pottery #ceramics

Learning to make cordage like the Neanderthals from @sallypointer.bsky.social. I’m using flax as it was the easiest prepared bast fiber to find. The 3-ply Neanderthal cordage found in Abri de Maras was made from conifer bast and is dated to ~40 to 50 ka

Macaques on Japan's Shodoshima Island enjoy leaving chalk marks on stones.

They have no symbolic purpose, but recognisable geometric features (parallelism, intersections, repetitions).

Patients are dying in NHS hospital corridors. The Conservatives closed 100+ emergency care services since 2010. Demand Wes Streeting reopen them to treat patients. Sign the petition.
