A smaller section of the chamber, off to one side, appeared to be an office or perhaps a dorm room. Stacks of manga and half-filled sketchbooks lay toppled across a cluttered desk, surrounded by chewed pens, empty ramen cups, and half-eaten snack packs. A calendar from a New York Chinese restaurant hung crookedly on a nearby pegboard, its gold-leaf date long since faded. It featured a stylized dog, its gaze forward-facing. I wonder why it’s bearing its teeth? Maybe it was meant to be a Foo Dog, a symbol of protection? I shivered and turned away, only to have my attention drawn to a floor-to-wall display of collectible figurines. So many of them have pink hair…! After suppressing the urge to take a few of the rarer ones, I tried calling to Aina. “What I’m not seeing is any sort of interactive device, let alone whatever NAUGHT truly is—” Runes quivered and scattered as circuits flared, and large panels shot towards the edges of the chamber. The center area was now visible, revealing a giant blue orb of shifting light, its core pulsing like a slow, struggling heartbeat. It rested on a pillar made of cables and computer towers, wrapped in electric-blue coolant tubes.

The shadow took shape as a tall, elegant demon silhouette. “What say you to this one?” Raela frowned. “You must add color and make it solid for my full consideration.” A whirl of hues spread from the center of the shadowy demon, filling in his form. Large, polished onyx horns swept aside the long, dark lavender locks that spilled from his temples. His bright emerald eyes appeared faintly reptilian. He flared his enormous, bat-like wings once before settling them in a neutral position on his back. Raela pursed her lips. “You are acting as a peacock, aren’t you? With the purple hair… You are most assuredly vying for someone’s attention.” “Whose attention would I vie for?” he asked with mock innocence. “Euphridia’s,” she said confidently as the demon's face fell. “Oh, but one other thing.” “What?” Raela folded her arms. “When you meet her, be sure to wear clothes. It is not respectful to be naked in front of her.” He added a dark gray toga that hung to his mid-knees. “So many useless customs.”

“Oliver…? What was I…” My pulse spiked as I found myself caught in his blazing green gaze, our temples only inches apart. What would the others say if they saw us like this? “I see an enemy,” he said flatly. I sighed. “Yes, the world sees you as an enemy, but I see you as—” “A sea anemone!” he repeated with a shout, his face contorting. I stood up. “Huh?” Had I misheard him? Something hissed behind me as I shook my head to clear it further. Water sprayed over the bow as a gigantic mass of tentacles whipped forth from the ocean’s depths, slick with a bluish green glow and bristling with barbs. “That’s what you call a sea anemone?!”

So, there's something I've been thinking about for a while, and it just crystallized in the last week:

After recent events, I never want to see book reviews that say a story's villain is unrealistic for being 1 dimensional evil. You can hate them, wish for more, but never say unrealistic.
