“Wait,” Oliver hissed, turning toward me as he held out the ball of mist. “Within failure is opportunity.” I frowned. “Should I stab that thing instead?” He made a wry, oddly apologetic face. “Only if it comes to that. Try holding it in your hands first. Do whatever you need to do, but do not let it go.” I reached out and grabbed the mist with both hands, surprised to find it was more solid than I had expected. It was oddly squishy, and it held a faintly unsettling warmth. “It’s alive!” Nora gasped as it wriggled, tendrils of mist swarming around its orb-like perimeter, revealing a large, angry crimson eye at its core. “What the absolute fuck?!” I shrieked as its dilated pupil bounced around a few times before fixing on me. “You!” the General roared as he turned, zeroing in on our hiding spot. He charged, his sword dancing with shadowy flames as he drew it from his sheath. “Pour your will into it!” Oliver shouted as Relias and Nora prepared for impact.

“Ahh…” Oliver exhaled. “That would explain how he is unable to sense the demon inside that knight.” We all gave Oliver a hard look. “Why didn’t you just lead with that observation?!” Nora screeched. “Because you might have assumed it was a trap of my own making,” Oliver replied. “I simply walked you through the paces. Now you understand the situation properly.” I sneered. “I wouldn’t have assumed that!” “I was referring specifically to Lady Nora,” Oliver said, more serious than before. “She continues to confound every sense I have for perceiving will or intent.” His tone wasn’t sarcastic this time, only baffled. “The sage is easy enough to account for. His animus toward me is blatant—but more importantly, it follows a consistent, interpretable structure. And you? Well… you’re you.” Try as I might, I couldn’t tell if that was a compliment or a complaint.

Oliver turned away. “Services equivalent to the cake in front of you.” Not knowing the specific occasion made it hard to accept. “I should probably share this with—” “It would be a dreadful insult to custom, having a human share a gift from the demon king.” “You said it was a payment.” Oliver set his teeth. “I misspoke. Remittance! Regardless, do not insult the custom.”

fiction is a safe space to think of unsafe things if you feel it's messing you up, step away. don't assume it's messing everyone up and you need to eradicate it because you caught a case of the feel-bads from something. go sit with that and think about why instead of pissing in everyone else's cheerios.
