“Wait,” Oliver hissed, turning toward me as he held out the ball of mist. “Within failure is opportunity.” I frowned. “Should I stab that thing instead?” He made a wry, oddly apologetic face. “Only if it comes to that. Try holding it in your hands first. Do whatever you need to do, but do not let it go.” I reached out and grabbed the mist with both hands, surprised to find it was more solid than I had expected. It was oddly squishy, and it held a faintly unsettling warmth. “It’s alive!” Nora gasped as it wriggled, tendrils of mist swarming around its orb-like perimeter, revealing a large, angry crimson eye at its core. “What the absolute fuck?!” I shrieked as its dilated pupil bounced around a few times before fixing on me. “You!” the General roared as he turned, zeroing in on our hiding spot. He charged, his sword dancing with shadowy flames as he drew it from his sheath. “Pour your will into it!” Oliver shouted as Relias and Nora prepared for impact.

“Ahh…” Oliver exhaled. “That would explain how he is unable to sense the demon inside that knight.” We all gave Oliver a hard look. “Why didn’t you just lead with that observation?!” Nora screeched. “Because you might have assumed it was a trap of my own making,” Oliver replied. “I simply walked you through the paces. Now you understand the situation properly.” I sneered. “I wouldn’t have assumed that!” “I was referring specifically to Lady Nora,” Oliver said, more serious than before. “She continues to confound every sense I have for perceiving will or intent.” His tone wasn’t sarcastic this time, only baffled. “The sage is easy enough to account for. His animus toward me is blatant—but more importantly, it follows a consistent, interpretable structure. And you? Well… you’re you.” Try as I might, I couldn’t tell if that was a compliment or a complaint.

“Enough small talk,” Oliver muttered. “Let’s be on our way to the Northern Land of Dragons.” It was Nora’s turn to gasp. “The Land of Dragons?!” “That is our ultimate destination, is it not?” Oliver asked Relias. Relias gave him a flat look. “I surmise you’ve been there before.” “Once,” Oliver said without a hint of guilt. “It stands to reason the door to Paradise is somewhere within.” “Are there really dragons there?” Nora and I asked in near-unison. “Yes,” said Relias. “No,” replied Oliver. They glared at each other. “Sorry, but I’m going with Relias on this one,” Nora declared. “If the Holy Man says there are dragons, then there are dragons.” “There is one dragon,” Oliver clarified. “So the answer to your question is no.” Nora sneered. “Semantics!”

There, in the center of a small table, sat an entire cake. It was absurdly and anachronistically perfect, with bright pink frosting piped in tiny, intricate rosettes and a neat line of silver sugar pearls circling its base. Did I pass out again? I looked at the basket of hazelnuts in my hands, suddenly feeling unimpressed. “This has to be a trap,” I muttered, inspecting the cake. “No. Simply payment for services rendered,” Oliver’s voice drifted from behind me. I whirled around. “Services rendered?” “It is customary to repay debts,” he replied in a maddeningly circular fashion. “Again, what services?” A nearby fork had somehow made its way into my grip. Oliver turned away. “Services equivalent to the cake in front of you.” Not knowing the specific occasion made it hard to accept. “I should probably share this with—” “It would be a dreadful insult to custom, having a human share a gift from the demon king.” “You said it was a payment.” Oliver set his teeth. “I misspoke. Remittance! Regardless, do not insult the custom.”

It’s much better to keep your head down and live among humans and hybrids, where you can feed off ambient animus without lifting a finger.” Oliver glanced at Relias, sniffed, and sighed. “You did know that, correct? The majority of Demonkind would rather avoid mortal disputes entirely.” “So basically, all the demons we’ve encountered are…” I started. “Sociopaths!” Nora finished. “I was going to say misrepresentative of the whole!” Nora shrugged. “Same thing. Mine’s just faster.”

I bet it’s like a whole sermon of curses strung together!” Relias lifted an eyebrow. “I fear you would find it disappointingly pedestrian,” he said at last. “I must concede you possess far greater fluency in such expressions.” “Allegedly,” Nora murmured, catching my surprised expression. “Allegedly.” “Ah.” I found a dirty spot on the wall to clean, unable to shake the feeling that I might have been a trigger for such an eruption.

Streaks of sunlight blurred through the dense overgrowth as we sped soundlessly through the forest. Oliver was cheating outrageously, his lower half nothing but swirling dark smoke. My chin was hooked over his right shoulder, and to my embarrassment, there was clear evidence I’d drooled on it at some point. “You can stop, I’m fine now.” He slowed, shifting his form to let me slide down his back onto my own feet. “The priest will make sure of it.” I stood on my own two feet for a moment before yielding to the lingering dizziness and sitting on the forest floor. “We’re not going to tell him about this.” “Miss Rachel. While I will concede I am no expert regarding anatomy or physiology, you cannot seriously expect me to accept that losing consciousness twice in under forty-eight hours qualifies as anything resembling normal human health!” Fantasy heroes pass out all the time without any lasting ill effects, so why can’t I?

They might have figured out—” “Do you know how often my name gets uttered by cultists and the like? Anhinga is on their list as well; they often pray for forbidden knowledge from him. Not that he’d bestow it even if he did hear them, mind you, he is quite loyal to my sister.” He then made a rather strange face. “I might understand cursing me when you stub a toe. But it’s the humans who call my name during intimate relations that truly perplex me. Why would they ever invite me to join…”
