The decision not to exempt Norway and Iceland from EU tariffs on iron-alloys, clearly raises questions about the EEA, but also shows the EU in a negative light. Increased opposition to Norwegian EU membership in new poll - No 49%, Yes 31%. Young people more opposed than older.

Exactly.
It's a bit funny seeing some UK commenters first mad at Americans for some uninformed comments on UK politics, then turning around and explaining Danish elections like it was all about the UK.
November 21, 2025 at 7:23 AM
Reading UK commentary on this weeks Danish election would make you think it was all about migration - it wasn’t.

High housing costs, a rural-urban divide, scrapping a public holiday, the Mink controversy, local factors & general fatigue all are issues which played against the Soc Dems.

«Very specific political circumstances» in Denmark means «The applicability of the Danish Social Democratic strategy (on migration) to the political situation in the UK is not self-evident.»

Good piece on why you need to understand Denmark before trying to simply copy-paste its asylum policy.

The thing about trying to project UK politics onto Danish politics/society is that, the context is completely different. For starters, the election yesterday used PR, not FPTP.

(And, to state obvious, Denmark is more than just Copenhagen. There were some surprising results across the country).

Big history made in Copenhagen this morning. After yesterday’s election, the Social Democrats - for the first time since 1938! - will not run the city. The Danish capital gets its first Mayor from Green Left (Socialistisk Folkeparti).

Soc Dems fall to third in Copenhagen, good night for SF, but also not the left-green majority in the city some polls predicted (Enhedslisten will be disappointed to have actually lost vote share).

Bloc politics is a concept so alien to the UK, yet it’s been the basis of coalition building in the Nordics for a long time. That said, the Danish Soc Dems broke with ‘Red bloc’ in 2022 by forming the ‘government across the middle’, as they call it, with Venstre and Moderaterne.
Danish right-wing populists are pretty much back to the same level as before Mette Frederiksen came to power. Soc Dems are competitive because they lead a left-wing bloc in a PR system. Doesn't transfer neatly to the UK, where losing liberal voters to Greens/etc would cost Labour seats to Reform

🌨 Following ~21 cm of fresh snowfall in the last ~24hrs, the snow in #Tromsø is currently 67.5 cm deep. It has snowed 3 times on this date since 2015: in 2015, 2023, and 2024, with the most snow falling in 2023 (12 cm). This time last year the ground was mostly snow-free.

A very important framing. We tend to think of the climate crisis as a purely meterological issue, but it has far wider implications which we’re not prepared for.

This ECtHR ruling has been surprisingly underreported. It ruled that Norway must assess the global climate impacts of oil & gas before opening new oil fields in order to comply with the ECHR (while ruling the below licences comply with climate law). Wider implications could be fascinating.
