We could eliminate these deaths overnight by not giving drivers and pedestrians concurrent light rotations. It’s completely insane we ask pedestrians to cross the street and drivers to take turns at the same time
Absolutely sickening video (Pix 11
has surveillance footage). Little girl hustling across as the walk sign flashes and the bus driver hurtling down the street making a turn into the crosswalk without braking it looks like. If that were my kid I’d be in lockup right now for ******

Wake up call to policy makers who effectively shut-in elderly constituents to waste away. Good idea to email this to local, state and federal electeds.
Research shows that biking is very, very healthy for people 65+.

Findings after reviewing 28 prior studies:

"Cycling in later life links to improved mobility [and] balance."

"Older cyclists often report psychosocial health, life satisfaction, and well-being improvements."

Labor unions packed the Suffolk Legislature on Tuesday after finding the county yanked a longtime job contract from a union-friendly shop to a politically connected one.

They weren’t having it.

These Long Island brothers came to the U.S. as kids. ICE deported them to a country they hardly know.
With no criminal records, they went for a routine check-in. Sent to El Salvador, they're desperate to return to their American lives.

Vision Zero means building a world where zero people are killed or seriously injured in preventable crashes.

Developed in Sweden, Vision Zero was brought to the U.S. in 2014 as a result of our organization’s efforts.

It’s a strategy now adopted across five continents.

After several days of mid-30s we're back to the deep freeze today and into the next work week. Snow is likely Sunday adding to the filthy, rock-hard crust not yet cleared from public infrastructure like this bus shelter, one of hundreds in Suffolk County not yet cleared. More in ALT.

Shoveling a Snowy Sidewalk Is An Act of Resistance — Streetsblog USA
Shoveling a sidewalk in winter is always a critical act of community care — but in an era of government assault on civil liberties, it's also an act of resistance.

Reasons the plastics treaty failed with recos for next time. "As demand for fossil fuels in energy declines, many oil-producing nations see plastics as a future growth market to sustain their petrochemical sectors, making any treaty obligations that address plastic production a geoeconomic threat."
New report on plastics treaty negotiations to date

“Unfortunately, process so far has not always facilitated opportunities to find agreement or prevent low ambition countries from blocking progress,” says Dr Antaya March

What appears to be a simple story about a conservation win is linked (literally, in the story) to a more complex and long running story of parkland acquisitions and public access. A good time for some updates, too.
A nonprofit will be able to purchase 5 pristine acres of land in Oyster Bay Cove after the state awarded it $1.29 million for the acquisition, setting the stage for the expansion of the neighboring Red Cote Preserve.
