Compared to the U.S., roadway infrastructure has been much improved to allow for multi-use beyond cars. Since 2022 new cars have Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) (auto-braking, speed limiting, rear backup camera/sensors proximity detectors) for accident avoidance not required in the U.S.

Most Western European countries have seen a decrease in pedestrian deaths. They, too, however, are grappling with the increasing popularity of SUVs, and there is a vibrant policy debate on what, if anything, should be done to limit them, e.g., weight taxes.

One possible reason: Content syndicators, like the NY Times, may change the titles of articles to improve their ability to earn more licensing $. I've seen NY Times change titles of the same article; the identical article with different titles gets picked up in disparate publications.

FYI -There is a LI Greenway walk/bike project underway. One section from Bethpage to Brentwood should break ground next year. Others are pending.
