Markets, the central feature of microeconomics and macroeconomics, are a theoretical artifact mostly irrelevant to how the economy of the world works.

Trump is pushing private equity and crypto into YOUR 401(k) – putting your retirement savings at risk.

These shadowy markets lack strong guardrails to keep your money safe.

We can’t let Wall Street gamble with Americans’ hard-earned savings.

Well, Fam, just found out our health insurance is jumping from $1700 to over $3000 a month. And we still have to wait till Nov 1 to see more options—when the site will probably crash because everyone will be freaking out at the same time.

Either this ends with some sort of truth and reconciliation process where a very large number of people go to prison for a very long time or we will take a short pause and then start doing it again, but worse.
A Naperville man was hauled away by federal immigration agents Thursday morning as his two sons watched, the older boy begging them not to hurt his father and tearfully asking for a chance to speak to him before they left.
As his two sons watch and cry, ‘Pa, te amo,’ federal agents arrest man outside of Naperville apartments

Bartolomé de las Casas would probably be doxxed by and hiding from right wing Christian organizations if he were around today.
Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.

US intervention in South America, what could go wrong?
Machado issues her first statement since being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and makes a thinly-veiled appeal to Trump for US intervention in Venezuela:

Two reasons to click through: because Petri is always terrific, and for the unaccustomed, almost bracing sensation of seeing something in The Atlantic that's worth reading.
Alexandra Petri's writing has such punch to it, not only in terms of content but form. In her best stuff, you can *hear* her voice, and this is one of her best.
Are You Laughing Yet?
Everyone can say exactly what they want, free of the fear of censorship, except by the government.

Growing up in the '70s I'd read about strongman rulers in far-off places like Asia or Africa who had billion-dollar Swiss bank accounts and mansions in the French Riviera while their citizens were mired in poverty, and wondered how that could be allowed to happen

Now I know

the entire point of the piece (and the related book) you're replying to and didn't read is that your great-grandparents were eating formaldehyde milk and gypsum flour and arsenic jam because there were no food safety laws. Keeping food safe is a society's job, not an individual's!!!

The hopium is wild to see. No, Trump isn't "fucked." He is in a moment many fascists were, which is to say losing popularity once in power.

But that is why authoritarians take power: so no one can take it from them. Popularity doesn't matter as much when you're in complete control.
My takeaway from this: He is so fucked.
