The identity of the Dem nominee in 2028 will not be a significant variable in determining who holds presidential power in 2029. #uspol

100% this. 👆 And it was by design. A body to give more power to less populous states, with many having large populations of enslaved people. Of course, those anti-democratic and unjust structures continue today (even if Senators are now popularly elected). nymag.com/intelligence...
The Senate Is America’s Most Structurally Racist Institution
Why is massive overrepresentation for white America still acceptable in 2020?

Negotiating 101: Be willing to walk away.

It increasingly seems like the Democratic defectors came to a resolution just because they felt like they should come up with something after having worked at it for a while.

In terms of classic blunders, this is land war in Asia-level.

Just finished reading final student reflections after my AfAmStudies students finished reading “Wake” by @wakerevolt.bsky.social

This book hits so hard; both the stories of women-led revolts and the story of the persistence of Dr Hall inspired my students.

Y’all should read this book. #APAFAM 🗺️

can't understand our times without deep history
I feel silly publicizing a book in these times BUT my book describes how constitutional structures allowed the accumulation of generational wealth + rights for settlers and white people. These are the same advantages MAGA is trying to preserve today. Pre-order page:

This is a recurring pattern with police reforms. In place after place, decade after decade this happens but pointing this out is considered unreasonable and beyond the pale.

More of this ridicule as praxis please
Jeffries: “Nobody who's serious in this country takes Dr. Oz seriously…I'm not going to respond to any comments from randos like Dr. Oz, who is woefully unqualified to be in whatever position he holds in the administration. He's a joke. These people are all jokes.”

There’s no one I trust less than Donald Trump and Mike Johnson.

Any deal that relies on Republicans to keep their word is a bad one.

Democrats can’t give up on affordable health care for an empty promise. Minnesotans can’t afford for Democrats to cave.

Doubt itll ever sink in w most of the ppl on this site but I'm seeing a tremendous amount of rage at Rs getting a "political win" & like...are ppl just not having attention? Ds were trying to prevent a thing that, if Rs had agreed, would have been politically beneficial *to Rs*. They rejected that.

I recognize this is, to some extent, cope/bargaining, but

this is the the first of several votes necessary to end the shutdown, right? so even the present unfathomable fecklessness doesn't mean it's over over, and there are multiple potential blockage points ahead to reject a no-concessions 'deal'?

Listening to these pathetic rationalizations from King, Hassan, Shaheen, whoever else they have queued up.

Disappointed that they're not having windup speech by Sen. Neville Chamberlain.

An important point, even if your Senator is not on list:
Shaheen (D-NH), Ossoff (D-GA), Peters (D-MI), Kelly (D-AZ), Hassan (D-NH), Welch (D-VT), Baldwin (D-WI), and Slotkin (D-MI).
Retirees and bad instincts (Plus GA and AZ)
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

One problem with blurring punditry and politics is that there is no downside to being wrong. This is obviously a poor prediction, but nobody will care when it doesn't come true

what mtsw says, and also I don't think you even have to consider it charisma. He's been promoted by mainstream media as a savvy businessman and fun character for like three decades. hardly any other politician has anything like that kind of massive generational publicity machine. 1
The key factor that everyone seems to always forget is that Trump was the host of what was once the highest rated show on network TV - a purportedly non-fiction show that portrayed him as a hyper-savvy and hyper-successful businessman.
Trump has gotten huge numbers of infrequent voters to the polls, twice. He's deeply unpopular but has mobilized a large, unprecedented coalition of Americans motivated by some combination of ignorance, avarice, and cruelty. It is hard to describe what he has as something other than charisma

It’s deeply pathetic that Republican members of Congress have completely abdicated their constitutional responsibilities. What a bunch of cucks!
The Senate has defeated an effort by Democrats to force a war powers vote on the U.S. military buildup re: Venezuela. Sen. Rand Paul R-KY & Sen. Lisa Murkowski R-AK were the only two GOP Senators to break ranks.
