Yeah, you can take the dude out of Apartheid, but it's a little harder to take the Apartheid out of the dude

100% this. 👆 And it was by design. A body to give more power to less populous states, with many having large populations of enslaved people. Of course, those anti-democratic and unjust structures continue today (even if Senators are now popularly elected). nymag.com/intelligence...
The Senate Is America’s Most Structurally Racist Institution
Why is massive overrepresentation for white America still acceptable in 2020?

Just noting that he's not a Democrat.

Seems right. The deeper issue is that the Senate itself is such an undemocratic institution in so many ways.

Honestly, they're getting better at it. Baby steps, but his was better than March. Keep pressuring the whole caucus.

I'd be happy if Schumer went, but that's not the real issue. A Dem (+ King, uggh, and Sanders) caucus that wanted to be more confrontational would choose a different leader. Some green shoots there. Schatz seems to want more caucus leadership. In the Spring he was Team Cave, now not so much.

The minority leader reflects their caucus much more than they shape it. 25 Dem Senators could depose Schumer at anytime if they wanted a different type of leadership. They don't because they don't want to. Their reasons might good (he was effective as majority leader) or bad (they're chickenshit)

pps, I guess, tangible ways to improve the odds of future fight from the Dem caucus in the Senate include supporting @peggyflanagan.bsky.social Senate campaign. A lot of talk about primaries last night, and Minnesota will have one next year with real impact on the Fight/Cave balance.

Last thought, for now, is reminding myself to maintain perspective and focus on the GOP assault on human dignity and self-government and on the institutions that make this assault possible. The ridiculousness of the Senate transcends the fecklessness of individual Senators.

Like many I'm not happy with Senators King, Shaheen, et all.
But, we all need to spare occasional thoughts for how utterly stupid and repetitive these GOP talking points are. Either this man is dumber than a box of rocks or he thinks that his constituents are.

And by repetitive, I mean since the original ACA debates 16 years ago when the same misunderstandings of the workings of insurance were used as policy arguments.
