Strongest memory is seeing “The Battle of Britain” film at Kinema in the Woods, Woodhall Spa (in about 1970). Cinema opened in 1922 and still going, I believe. #childhoodcinema

Paris, the day after Christmas, 1894.

Alphonse Mucha, a humble Czech immigrant is eeking out a living in a print shop. An amazing offer comes up. Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress, needed a poster for her play. In a week, working under pressure, Mucha cranked out this poster.

Mucha showed a 50 y/o Sarah, as a fresh-faced young maiden, like she appeared in her role. She wore a royal robe and carried a palm branch as she paraded in to rescue her lover in the play’s final scene. Mucha’s design was simple. He put the title at the top, the name of the theater at the bottom, and dedicated the rest to the person everyone was coming to see: the producer-director-star of the play, Sarah Bernhardt. The poster was nearly life-size. The posters were all over town by New Year’s Day. Parisians started stealing the posters, and it was clear Mucha was on to something. Mucha became an overnight sensation. Bernhardt signed him to a 6-year contract, becoming the most in-demand artist in town. This set the tone for Mucha’s signature style: willowy maidens with flowing hair, in long elegant gowns, amid flowery pastel designs, and backed with a halo-like circle. These were lithographs, a printing process popularized in late 19th century Paris. When he made a single design, he churned out 100s of cheap, exquisite 4-color posters. Soon, his pastels appeared on tobacco tins, magazine covers, calendars, wallpaper, postcards, and ad campaigns hawking everything from biscuits to beer. Mucha’s style helped define what became known as Art Nouveau. As Europe eased into a new century, it embraced a nouveau art. He was inspired by curves, the curves of plants and curvaceous women. He literally wrote the book on Art Nouveau as he published a collection of prints that inspired budding artists. In 1900, Paris held the World Exposition showcasing Mucha’s work. Soon, his style spread all over the world. Ironwork street lamps bending like flower stems, and Tiffany’s flower-petal stained-glass lamps were everywhere. Much of his work was intended as throwaway advertising, but it was soon accepted as high art. The gap separating “pop culture” and just plain “culture” has blurred. And Alphonse Mucha’s poster may have started that.
