it’s already gotten very old to name check 1984 but between the “Department of War” and the “Board of Peace,” it’s hitting home. and we feel not so far from “we have always been at war with Eurasia”
Trump’s Board of Peace has now officially been recognized as an international organization, according to the White House.

(Content warning: ICE violence)

At around 1:40 this afternoon, I witnessed federal agents with ICE and CBP arresting a US citizen after hitting her car from behind, and then kneeling on the head of a legal observer in the snow, preventing breathing and bloodying their face.

This is the sort of thing that defines fascism more than most other aspects. The installation of secret police to monitor everyone for suspicion not of doing anything wrong, but of being the wrong kind of person.
I’m not sure people outside the Twin Cites realize the prevalence and the fear ICE is causing in Twin Cities. They are dining undercover pretending to be couples at restaurants, they are going to businesses and checking the license plates of cars to find employees. Every public place is compromised.

Independence. They choose independence and have been fighting for independence and sovereignty for a very long time. We colonized Greenland and brutalized the indigenous inhabitants, we were doing forced sterilisation to their bodies until the fucking 1990s.
In Denmark, you get free healthcare, free university education, a solid state pension and 5-star public transport.

The USA have people going bankrupt to pay medical fees, many with huge student loan debts and ICE terror on top of it all.

If you were from Greenland - who would you choose?

I thought this was about newsom until I got to the quoted post, either way the same applies... these opportunistic shitheels are not going to save anyone but themselves, and they're definitely not on our side
a genocide denying misogynist is not gonna save yall from fascists. that man is a nightcrawler for liberal fame, and thinks this is his next ticket.

Dems for a while now are these weird placeholder puppets that, when in charge, keep whatever version of society Republicans have fucked us into as the new status quo, and just keep us in that holding pattern until the Republicans get back in power and fuck everything up more, and the cycle continues
People don't want to accept that the primary reason that we have Trump today is that the previous administration completely failed. It should have never gotten to the point where it was in the so-called hands of the voters. It was already too late by then.
SEOUL, Jan 13 (Reuters) - South Korea's special prosecutor on Tuesday requested the death penalty for former president Yoon Suk Yeol on charges of insurrection over his brief imposition of martial law in December 2024.

Pete and Amy are really out here arguing that ICE isn’t killing people by the employee handbook when we are out here arguing ICE should not exist. They do NOT represent the will of the people.
@petebuttigieg.bsky.social: "We have an ICE agent who should have been trained not to be in front of a vehicle and never to shoot into a moving vehicle, and yet this happened on [Kristi Noem's] watch. The whole POINT of Homeland Security is to make this country more stable and safe."

isn't this just what they have been doing with Black people for years though? it just seems like the expansion to doing it to everyone who opposes them that they have been telling us about
The shooting is shocking enough but the government's response is off the charts when you consider that this incident is forensically documented on video.

Normally I hate phone calls, but I had a great chat with my brother today and I feel better every time we get to chew the fat awhile. It is, in fact, calming and grounding to just talk to the folks you care about. To walk and fidget and have a meandering conversation.
Actually I can't stress enough, and I know this is hella millennial coded, but especially talk on the phone. Not a video call, the phone, where you pace and wander and listen to the voice of someone you like/love. I think a lot of us have forgotten this simple pleasure. It's seriously calming.
Rough vibes on this website today, likely because people feel Hopeless and Helpless Because Can't Stop It and No One Who Is Supposed To Is Trying To So Now We're Fighting Each Other™. I recommend activities such as book, or potentially instrument if you like instrument, or even do talk on phone.

Porn and erotica are important and societally valuable forms of speech, and the defense of them, in the face of state and church attempts at repression, is a necessary political act.

The real reason to tax billionaires isn’t to let the government spend their money, it’s to prevent them from buying government and directing how they spend our money
Again we have to ask the question, does this act justify him having a substantial amount of control over society?

Should public health experts be having to humour his "just askin questions" and suck up to him for the slight chance of American healthcare improving because of this?

Translators deserve respect. They deserve to be listed alongside authors when a work is published/acknowledged/nominated. They deserve not to be enslopified just like artists, musicians, and writers as they’re essentially all three in one.

Respecting the arts means respecting your fellow artists.
Deep breath
Ok I'm going to try and stay calm
But I'll point out that AI translation is literally causing translators to be fired (see the whole Harlequin line in France)

Any work made ineligible for the Nebula Awards by them disallowing slop and slop-assisted work was never eligible in the first place.

"There are legitimate uses in translation, research"

If you consider 30-70% incorrect results that poison neighborhoods with new cancers "legitimate"
I really don't know what anyone in the SFWA was thinking allowing gen slop into the Nebula Awards in the first place, but I'm glad that decision has been reversed.
Dear SFWA and surrounding industry:

It's a two-mailout kind of day!

Thank you to everyone who wrote in.

The Board wishes to share the results of two votes held this afternoon, with further amendments to our Nebula Awards Rules.

research and translation are NOT "legitimate" uses of AI and that should be well fucking obvious at this point ffs

"I refuse." This is it. There's no reason we should accept a narrative of an already settled future which marginalizes humans and individual agency. No one wants this. No one asked for it.
"This promise of an AI future, is really just a collective anxiety that wealthy people have about how well they're gonna be able to control us in the future."

- @tressiemcphd.bsky.social with an absolute mic drop moment about AI bullshit.

Incredible words.
