When that Ted Sarandos had that quote about his editor son watching Lawrence of Arabia on his iPhone, my friend who went to Chapman film school at the same time posted that “we should have bullied this kid even more” 😭😭

I accidentally wrote an essay and I stopped before it became 3,000 words but believe it or not, I have more to say on this... someday
I didn't mean to thread but this has been cooking with me for a while. I see such a disconnect between the true enthusiasm for moviegoing online and in person (it feels more broad and rabid than when I was that age, even) and the failures at the top level of this industry to meet them. It sucks!

If we're lucky, someday we'll be able to look back and see that so much of what is wrong in the film (or any) industry right now is the narcissism of a gerontocracy who are old and incurious, but also delusional enough to still think they are the *least* old and incurious living generation.

It bears repeating that Tom Homan is a fucking psycho and Greg Bovino's exile means functionally nothing when it comes to what's happening on the ground in Minnesota.

if you have a ring camera you are a child, terrified of the silhouette of a jacket hanging on a chair. you are lower than a worm to me. you have sold your soul to a devil that has offered you nothing in return

I think US Traitors discourse right now is split between
1) People who have dated a Rob and are having full on war flashbacks about everything he does
2) People who, by choice or not, would simply never be in such a position and just like to see Snake Man go

So I don’t know when the right time is or was to announce this, but I worked on this show for much of last year and wrote an episode of it and it’s coming out sometime in 2027! Wow www.netflix.com/tudum/articl...

One of the most shocking things lately, where I thought to myself, “what kind of country am I living in,” is realizing how many people, people I even considered friends, enjoyed Yeastie Boys’ bagels

please remember that no matter how many “ICE is losing in MN” articles you read today, there is still a very real, urgent, ongoing crisis in Minnesota.

people need food and they need rent money. that has not changed.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

My main sundance era was the Trump I era and I remember feeling so alienated by what the festival seemed to think films ought to be in response to the social climate. I will say of the films I’ve seen there’s much more holistic sense of what art is supposed to do in an emergency.

It has felt weird to post about movies this week, but I will say that seeing the premiere of ONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM yesterday was a mountaintop festival experience … easily my favorite of Sundance so far and a reminder of what we have to live for
