"mental illness or brain trauma can never ever ever ever ever make you do or say things that are wrong" is one of the strangest ideas that still has purchase on the internet

for @lwlies.com, my review of Return to Silent Hill, an adaptation of Silent Hill 2 that makes some bewildering decisions but still captures its spirit better than the recent Bloober Team remake lwlies.com/reviews/retu...
Return To Silent Hill review – if not entirely faithful, at least…
Christophe Gans returns to Konami's foggy nightmare town with mostly productive results.

rewatching the insider. i think we missed the boat on the cinematic potential of the fax machine. the kind of covert cross-country note-passing they get up to early on is so compelling

logic of zionism 👇
My most woke opinion is that integration was a mistake. The problem with Separate But Equal wasn't the Separate part, it was the Equal. Because all things being equal, we woulda been just fine without em
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

some of the most elegant and powerful filmmaking of the year (perhaps the best work of PTA's entire career) makes up the first 40 minutes of this movie and i have yet to hear a compelling dismissal of it. though good lord many have tried
I just tried to rewatch “One Battle After Another” and couldn’t get past the first 20 minutes. It’s so… “Monster’s Ball.”

my review of The Bone Temple is up! wish so badly i had liked it more, and following up my favorite film of last year was never going to be easy, but it let me down in almost every conceivable way: open.substack.com/pub/capybaro...

Pitt fandom is revealing how many people in 2026 are not capable of watching a normal tv show in a normal way. they just hear a character say something and receive it the same way they would a social media post, as a sincerely expressed belief of the creator
Weird takes going around that The Pitt is doing AI propaganda. Maybe it turns out that way, but so far the person advocating for it is a lady we're specifically meant to think sucks, and is in our hero's way, it already fucked up, and the one other person who liked it was the pedantic nerd.

it's unfortunate that the cops in the jack the ripper case were having to deal with the first ever serial killer. they were really like "the suspect must be a surgeon.... who else could have such a keen interest in cutting people up?"

this is basically the same thing as those guys who insist you should paternity test your kids as a matter of course
If you think public health policy/ advice should be

“You don’t need testing if you’re sexually active and you’re super duper sure your partner wouldn’t cheat on you”

Instead of

“Sexually active people should get tested regularly”

You are reactionary
