The people were on our side. We were building momentum to help save our democracy. We could have won - the premium increase notices were just starting.
And giving in now will embolden him. Things will likely get worse.

I, too, thought about what Sharon would have written. I’m glad this exists.
As an aside: there are many wonderful health/science reporters working today. But, boy howdy, Sharon was awfully darn good.

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.
Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."
Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

To put this in perspective, $40 billion is about the entire yearly budget for the National Institutes of Health. Should we be bailing out Argentina, or curing cancer, Alzheimer's and age-related dementia, heart disease...?
Argentina President Javier Milei doing the “Trump dance” at Mar-a-Lago after getting an $40 billion bailout.
Meanwhile, Trump won’t renew subsides for American healthcare.

This whole thread is gold but this might be the most common PhD app error: an applicant wants to work on a topic that’s not part of my expertise.
Applicants might be surprised at how specialized researchers are. I wouldn’t be able to supervise a dissertation on child lang in my lab, for instance.

...but still, some mistakes I've seen
MISTAKE 1: Clearly not having actually any read the work of the PIs you mention. It's not 'common' but it happens enough that I want to warn people about it: we notice.
MISTAKE 2: Mixing up this paragraph with other points, see 'topic sentence' above.

Is The Sandwich Assault going to show up in Psych textbooks next to the Loftus "crashed==broken glass" false memory studies?
If a sandwich was described as "forcibly flung", does it make it more likely you will remember a mustard and onion explosion?

Defense begins, “This case, ladies and gentlemen, is about a sandwich. A sandwich that according to Agent Lairmore somehow both exploded on his chest in a spray of mustard and onions but also landed intact on the ground still in its Subway wrapper.”

This is getting out of hand. I walk into my office this morning to find that SOMEONE* has BROKEN IN and left a DELICIOUS SOURDOUGH LOAF WITH A TINY HEART ON IT on my desk.
I will be opening a thorough investigation into this matter.

Voting in my small town is genuinely fun. You are greeted by friendly poll workers, get to chat with your neighbors, and often there's a bake sale. I wish it were this smooth for everybody.

This is so true.
I was struck today, in a meeting, by the extent to which interviewing someone for an intellectually intensive role is like a structured vibe check. the content of the answers is so much less important than what they reveal about how this person thinks creatively
