Yeah his “when there are even more robots that need servicing we will finally fix the shortage of qualified trades workers” rhetoric is even dumber than “great news, we’re doing Snowpiercer child sacrifices”

When I tell students about the realities of pre-New Deal industrial life — where it was so commonplace for workers to die on the job that a Pittsburgh newspaper once celebrated that “only” 127 had died the previous month — they can’t believe it.

Let me tell you about factory jobs and the American dream. My grandpa had an 8th grade education. After WWII, he became a machinist for Goodyear, a union job he held his entire life until retirement on full pension at 55. He sent two kids through parochial school. Grandma never had a job.

My mom died on Tuesday after a very long decline (3 years) that started with blood clots that led to dizziness and a fall, then a stroke and a second fall that put her in hospice for 7 months.

Being on vigil for my mom gives me way too much time to square the circle of my obsessions with WoT and Discworld. Nyneave is traumatized Tiffany Aching. Cadsuane Sedai is Granny Weatherwax if she lived to be 300. Mat is magical Moist Von Lipwig. Prove me wrong.

Men do not need to put on a dress and go into a public restroom to abuse women and children.

They usually just go home.
The crux of this framing is that men will “exploit” trans inclusivity to perv in women’s bathrooms. The problem is: men - like the *registered sex offender* in this story - already do this, and there’s zero evidence that trans-inclusive policies have suddenly incentivised more of them into action.

And so, the children of the revolution were faced with the age-old problem: it wasn’t that you had the wrong kind of government, which was obvious, but that you had the wrong kind of people. 2/2
People on the side of The People always ended up disappointed, in any case. They found that The People tended not to be grateful or appreciative or forward-thinking or obedient. The People tended to be small-minded and conservative and not very clever and were even distrustful of cleverness. 1/2

It occurs to me that the two best Discworld characters, Granny Weatherwax and Sam Vimes, are perfect bookends, bc Vimes arguably has the broadest character arc, in terms of his scope of influence at least, while Granny never changes, because she’s already perfectly herself.

Mr. Rogers said "look for the helpers," but his advice was for CHILDREN.

If your ass is grown your role is to BE the helper.

I wish I could find the person who said this originally, but it's been too long.
