“Mayors with nonconsecutive terms are counted twice in the official record, much like U.S. presidents. But [Matthias] Nicolls' second term [in the 1670s] is missing from [NYC’s] count, resulting in a misnumbering of all subsequent mayors.”

Miscount of NYC mayors spans centuries, archive search confirms
An official document from 1674 confirms that Zohran Mamdani should be sworn in as the 112th mayor, not the 111th.

i was just thinking about this. when a fascist squeaks by, it’s a mandate. when a progressive wins by a landslide, he needs to be deferential. it’s such bullshit.
as a texan i'll spare people zohran takes but one thing i think we're going to see even more of now that he's mayor is mainstream media shift the goal posts of what having a mandate is. trump had a mandate when he narrowly won but zohran has to reach out to all these factions no matter what

1 image of Mamdani with other people, with a sign:

Our Bodies
Our Genders
Our Choices
Our Futures

1 image of a Mamdani quote: “You need not even know a trans New Yorker to stand up for trans New Yorkers… This is a trial of all of us to see who we are willing to give up. And our answer is no one.”
Happy @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social inauguration day! Mamdani was one of the few elected officials to come to a rally GLM co-organized for trans youth, while he was still polling in low single digits, to demand access to gender affirming healthcare for trans youth.

A way to support Vida is by donating via Gogetfunding. It's a bit more daunting than gofundme, but it works similarly. Let's keep Vida's voice among those we hear (okay, read, but you all know what I mean).
Hello all, I'm sure some here are wondering why I've gone quiet lately.

The TL;DR: I have Polycystic Kidney Disease for a long time. This year, I was pregnant and gave birth prematurely. And while dealing with the baby's NICU stay, a nephro told me I will need a kidney transplant in 4 years. +
Hi all; I'm going to undergo a significant procedure later this year (sorry, would rather not disclose) and my husband's health insurance doesn't cover it. We're going to need funds for the care during and after. Any help would be much appreciated:

The lesson of 2025: fighting back works.

Not immediately. Not perfectly. It’s a grind.

But don’t let fascists tell you they are inevitable.

Reminder that years ago it was found out that the FBI straight up made up a whole bunch of fake forensic sciences, plural. People have gone to jail and been executed due to literally pseudoscience.

Hair forensics, for instance, is totally nonsense.

They admitted it.

Yikes. You can request a manual postmark, but if you don’t, the postmark won’t necessarily be applied on day or mailing.
As of 12/24/25, USPS changed policy on when they postmark mail. Mail dropped off is no longer guaranteed a same-day postmark. Tax returns & other time-sensitive items are now stamped when they reach a regional processing center, which may be days later. Plan deadlines accordingly to avoid penalties.

As someone who has to review minutes for multiple committees, I can affirmatively state that AI for meeting transcription is not accurate, edits to the minutes now take up more committee time, and it is much worse than having a person prepare accurate minutes.

Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +
