Has this been a soul-searching moment for the fact-checking industry? Everything Harris says came, or is coming, true. And so much of it was labeled as "misleading" or "lacking context" at the time, on the grounds of "but he said he wouldn't!" (see, e.g. www.npr.org/2024/08/25/g... from @npr.org)

Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significant—though not final—victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

ironic that people say Bluesky is dying because i read this post and died
A dictionary, a sewer district, a federal agency, and some random dude walk into a social media site. I don’t have a joke, it’s just a description of BlueSky.

During the pandemic, the US implemented the most effective social welfare policies in our history -- programs that worked because they were big enough, simple, and universal. And then we withdrew them. This remains imo the central economic-policy story of our times. davisvanguard.org/2025/05/3hou...

This is the text of the email just sent to hundreds of international students telling them that their visas have been revoked due to activism or social media posts.

This is a good thread by one of my "trusted sources," @polotek.bsky.social.
So. I think it's important to share news about what's happening. But I'm trying to square that with the other reality that it contributes to doomscrolling.

I think we need to start putting these things into context and talking about what we are learning or what we should take away from it.

post a 🚨 spoiler 🚨 iff you've never seen this!!

write f() for the floor function i.e. round down to an integer and d() for the divisor function i.e. # of divisors

Consider 5:

f(5/1)+f(5/2)+f(5/3)+f(5/4)+f(5/5)
= 5+2+1+1+1 = 10

d(1)+d(2)+d(3)+d(4)+d(5)
= 1+2+2+3+2 = 10

Coincidence? #iTeachMath ♾️

(a) stunning visual. (b) any differential geometers able to weigh in?
I have a legitimate technical question for differential geometers like @diffgeom.bsky.social on how to map a hemisphere to a closed connected surface while still preserving a particular sorta-Euclidean metric/distance. Here's a Desmos graph that kinda illustrates this goal. All input is welcome 😁🧮♾️

according to @merriam-webster.com the first usage of the word “sewerage” dates back to 1834.

other words first used that year include humoristic, optimistic, and self deprecating, and i feel like that explains so much.

• no multiples of 5?
