Trump admin Is attempting to massive cut federal transit funds, seeking to:
1–Eliminate transit account, which funds billions of $ in capital expenses for transit agencies
2–Prevent state DOTs from “flexing” funds for transit

These changes, if they occurred, would be devastating for US transit.
POLITICO Pro: Trump administration proposals seek to eliminate transit funding
DOT recently sent two proposals to the White House budget office seeking to pare back transit money.

Illinois will effectively eliminate parking minimum requirements in ~all of Chicago and much of its suburbs thanks to the transit funding bill that passed last night.
Also contains parking reform! This is a preliminary map of Chicagoland based on the People Over Parking Act provision.

It would also apply downstate though!

Codes are banning the old high-GWP refrigerants (this is good and global best practice), but the new lower-GWP refrigerants are more flammable and the codes are overestimating their risk and requiring expensive mitigation for this. So designers try to avoid it by just doing packaged units.

Consider: Hyundai sells electric buses abroad for $350k – 1/3 what the average US transit agency pays.

Pricier buses undermine US transit service by leading agencies to keep using older, breakdown-prone models. They also force agencies to assume more debt, straining their already shaky finances.

A new research paper by Ed Glaeser, Sam Silverberg, et al. identifies several fundamental problems with the US bus market:
- It’s a duopoly, dominated by Gillig and New Flyer
- Foreign (and cheaper) competitors are blocked by federal Buy America rules
- Transit agencies customize *everything*

In the US, even a “cheap” transit bus costs 2-3x more than in Asia or Europe -- and one agency may pay twice as much as another for nearly identical vehicles.

In Bloomberg, I explored a ripe opportunity to improve transportation by applying Abundance-coded, supply-side reforms.

Why US Cities Pay Too Much for Transit Buses
A new paper argues that lack of competition, demand for custom features and “Buy America” rules have driven up costs for transit agencies in the US.

The US truck companies are so far behind already. Scania was trying to enter the market and now that will be impossible. We can't have nice things in this country
Every day, Trump wakes up and thinks “what product should I make arbitrarily more expensive today?”

Truck tariffs means drivers pay billions more for vehicles, companies/consumers pay more for shipping, & the benefits to truckmakers get outweighed by costs to other manufacturers
