Astrophysicist. Quasar enthusiast. Physics professor. Mother, etc. Misanthrope who loves humanity. Why can’t we get this thing right?
Look at this! Propose big things. Don’t back down. Have a positive vision and resist naysaying. Mandan is showing us how to model the positive future we all deserve!
The goal of the multiyear plan, which Ms. Hochul is expected to introduce alongside the mayor in an appearance Thursday morning and will be a part of her State of the State address on Jan. 13, would be to offer universal access to children statewide, her office said.

Okay sure. But (a) who will fund the investigators who do the science? Do they plan to give out grants too? Or just let whoever do whatever? And (b) this has such gilded age vibes… like early 20th century when Carnegie etc. funded science. The federal model was such an improvement. Makes me sad.
Eric Schmidt's science-focused foundations plans to put a 3.1m visible-light observatory into space within 3-5 years from conceptual design. Schmidt Sciences have hired some great people in recent years, but that seems... fast. arstechnica.com/space/2026/0... 🔭

They were standard through the 80’s for sure. I remember realizing they were just tubes when, as a kid, heard faint voices of the movie dialogue and tried to figure out where that sound was coming from, discovering a hole in the arm rest!
I just asked @helenczerski.bsky.social: Remember those airline headphones that are like air tubes?

She looked at me like I was crazy and said: That’s not a thing. How old are you?

I think that’s was a thing and it wasn’t that long ago. Am I wrong?

Just one? So many perfect albums in the 90s!

Portishead: Dummy
Tricky: Maxinquaye
Tori Amos: under the pink
Sarah McLachlan: fumbling towards ecstasy

Are just the first ones that pop in my mind. Genuine albums where’s you press play and walk away.
post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't nirvana, pearl jam, etc etc

Hot take: songs are too short and movies are too long.
There are no pop songs longer than 4 minutes anymore. You’re lucky if you get 3. It’s annoying.
And all the movies are 2.5 hrs+. What happened to the 90-minute movie?

That is all.

It’s embarrassing.
We need a Generative AI Code of Conduct at the University level because it's becoming increasingly clear that my colleagues (other professors and ESPECIALLY admin) are using AI way more than my students are.

This has shown up in my feed a few separate times so it got me thinking:

people may not fully grok the value of being taught *how to think*.
It is it is actually the most valuable thing one could acquire.
Turns out employers like thinking employees, especially for high paying jobs.
Yes we all agree that this is the reason colleges are in trouble

No. The chief problem is, AI is literally A TOOL FOR UNLEARNING. The more you use it, the worse you get at whatever it is you’re using it for. It’s the opposite of educating, it’s uneducating. 2/2
