press at us department of labor (not anymore); DC for I guess a little bit longer, I don’t know; writer of plays and one (1) real movie
3,700 is SO FAR from enough.
I’m ONE follower short of reaching 3,700 - help spread the reach of labor reporting

My good people, you’re on crisis comms duty all the time now. Crack open those notes you took at the crisis consultant’s presentation. It’s a crisis. For everyone.

I don’t know what’s going to happen, but the almost unanimous assumption that he’ll stop with the East Wing/ballroom seems silly and credulous and unwise. It won’t overwhelm the White House itself if he also tears that down to build some awful palace.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation warned that President Trump’s planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom would “overwhelm the White House itself,” which spans just 55,000 square feet. https://wapo.st/4hmL8rC

Assata Shakur exchanged letters with Audre Lorde from prison, and Lorde wrote for her the poem "For Assata":

I dream of your freedom
as my victory
and the victory of all dark women
who forego the vanities of silence

I think I might start a service providing a mock @ichotiner.bsky.social interview for people with a humiliation kink. Like a dominatrix.

I can upcharge by actually publishing it on Substack, for the real sickos. I’m dead serious.

Remember when everyone was like “😩 don’t cancel the Post; cancel Prime instead”?

Prime at least still does what it’s meant for. Your packages still come. Not sure what the Post is for.

I’m the exact age of guy for whom this man was the first Graham Greene.

Then later had to say “wait…” when learning about the English writer.

He really was excellent. One of the greats. RIP.
Graham Greene was one of those actors whose presence was absolutely, 100% guaranteed to make whatever movie or TV show he was in better. He added instant gravitas and authority, reliable stealthy humor and depth beyond whatever was on the page.

Should've been Emmy nominated for "Reservation Dogs."
Graham Greene, ‘Dances With Wolves’ Actor, Dies at 73
The actor’s role as Kicking Bird in the 1990 film ‘Dances with Wolves’ earned him a best supporting actor Oscar nomination.

“Trump’s attacks on workers are not an accident—they’re the plan.”
Essential Labor Day reading ⬇️
Campaigning for president, Donald Trump assured workers he would fight for them, write Robert L. Borosage and Sara Steffens. But ahead of Labor Day weekend, it is worth summarizing how extensive his assault on labor has been in his first months in office.

Textbook coup maneuvers.

Seize the ports/ points of entry, capture the broadcasters, take the palace.

The legacy / public media in the capital city has been captured/severely damaged. Our most seasoned journalists and trusted voices in DC being bought out, pushed out, or leaving the profession.

They were great times. Secretary Su created an atmosphere of genuine curiosity, a delight in questioning and learning and adapting. The room was full of excellent, brilliant people. What a shame to smother all that.
The first Friday of every month, @eganreich.bsky.social and I would meet at 7:45 am in my office. BLS would report the monthly jobs numbers & Egan helped find ways for me to talk about them publicly that were clear, concise, and honest—just like his latest article. #jobsreport #dol
The Damage to Economic Data May Already Be Done
Donald Trump’s pick to run the Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t have to manipulate any numbers to undermine the reliability of the government’s jobs reports.

I’m sad and angry about the damage that’s been done to BLS, a place that represents a spirit of civic cooperation in the pursuit of knowledge that’s dying in this country.

Really grateful to the @theatlantic.com for publishing this essay on that damage.

Some comfort in knowing there is nothing any of us can do or say about him that’s as mean as his staff handing him next month’s report.

🤓
EJ Antoni has never worked in statistics collection. He is 5 years out of his PhD. He's only ever written one economics paper. His explicit, only qualifications are that he works in ultra-conservative think tanks & believes Trump's conspiracies about the BLS. Grim stuff.
Donald Trump named EJ Antoni, chief economist of the conservative Heritage Foundation, to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics

A lot of people seem to think they’re going to get another chance in some hazy imagined aftermath to demonstrate how they responded to the violent authoritarian destruction of this country.
