Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

“Hey guys, can we lock in here?” “Do you need to choose another seat?” “No, we don’t need laptops for this.” “You can stop online shopping, ok?” “Please don’t push anyone else’s chair over today, thanks!”
Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

“It doesn’t have to be good. It just has to be finished.”

can someone explain to me why doctors can't see sick patients anymore? Like why, if I call WHEN MY KID'S PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN OPENS, I am still told to just go to urgent care because it's impossible to actually see a doctor? Seems like a bad system!

My favorite artifact in the "you don't need AI to do art" discourse is, of course, screenwriter Dan O'Bannon's sketch of the facehugger to explain it to Giger.

Reminder hack for people who hate crowds: tomorrow is the best day of the year in America to do something you wouldn’t normally do. One year we went to the San Diego zoo on Super Bowl Sunday and it was AMAZINGLY EMPTY

They are systematically trying to take away our art, our culture, our community. They are disassembling, brick by brick, page by page, seat by seat, the places we go to experience moments of joy, empathy, hope, collective grief, connection.

Or he’s staring out with no idea what the fuck is going on. Could be either, but we love him.

my two best TV show recs for comfort watching in troubling times are Angel and Rockford Files. You simply cannot miss with those shows. Also @ifyoucantwell.bsky.social knew what he was doing when he put Angel in a shot-for-shot imitation of the Rockford Files intro in his Angel comic.

One thing I’ll say in my experience with high schoolers: young people desperately WANT places where they can settle into longer attention spans and connection with art, they just don’t realize it. I have found such success with tech bans in my classroom. Initial resistance, then relief + results.
On a trend us film professors have seen. Free link to “The Film Students Who Can No Longer Sit Through Films” from THE ATLANTIC yesterday.

It was a good day to be out with people in LA. Fuck ICE.

Also can we talk about the fucking feat Achebe pulls off in the last paragraph of Things Fall Apart because DAMN it really got me
Today my 10th graders shared their reactions to the end of Things Fall Apart and my 11th/12th graders finished watching The Conversation and it was one of those days I felt really grateful to be present with kids experiencing art and literature and empathy

Ok genuine question. If your job is a caregiving profession (medicine, teaching, senior care, childcare, etc) how are you handling the idea of a national strike/no work day (either on this Friday or any day in the future?)

It’s really difficult & disorienting but the feds hit LA extremely hard today. There were kidnappings all over & reported cluster raids in Chinatown, East LA, Ktown. This list shows to 1130 AM but they haven’t stopped all day

Ultimately you're not supposed to believe it. It not mattering is the point. The bolder the lie, the greater the impunity. The ultimate victory for evil is not convincing you, it's the truth being irrelevant.
We’re supposed to believe this is a domestic terrorist attacking ICE with a gun

Remember when teachers spent the majority of their time planning lessons, grading, and thinking about new units for their students? Now we have ICE protocols, AI protocols, lockdown trainings, & we have had to become experts very quickly in taking care of young people who are suffering from trauma.

ICE has now carried out two summary executions of innocent people in the streets of an American city.

If you work for ICE, there's no denying that's the mission you're supporting now. You don't get to claim in one year or ten or twenty that you didn't know what ICE was doing. You're complicit.
