The ending of Gundam F91 would have significantly less impact if the final line was "THIS WAR JUST BEGAN NOW", based from the original storyboard.

What originally prompted me to spend months researching how Sega consoles and games were sold in Italy in the 80s/90s was the fact that I kept seeing people adopting "US memories", remembering things that never happened (like Sega vs. Nintendo ads).
That's (also) why preservation is important.

The marketing of Sega in Italy: from arcades to homes, 90s Italy just loved SEGA. And Giochi Preziosi loved them back with many weird ideas.

If you’re worried that “protesters getting out of hand” will give the President a reason to implement martial law in an American city, what do you think is happening now? They’re kidnapping and murdering people and the cops are being sent in to arrest people for noise complaints?

Example of one of those nice scenes. I think maybe it's better to say that F91's not amazingly animated, but has plenty of great stills and has flashes of great direction.

There's something about how smooth the flow from each major point in this clip that makes me love it.

Well F91's out of the way, so we're now in the home stretch! Hathaway 2's soon, but besides that there's only one UC show to get to: Victory.

I'm excited for this one after years of stories about its bleakness, but a bit sad that the end is in sight. (also I had to fit this image somewhere, shush)

Didn't expect to have this many words on F91 but it all leads to a longer story crunched into a 2hr timeframe. It has multiple flaws, but it also has an incredible opening third of the movie and a stellar voice cast.

F91 isn't great but god damn is the possibility endearing to think about.

He's a great blend of the three main UC protags but I wish he had time to make himself more distinct. Same for Cecily too - her story & the Crossbone Vanguard are interesting but messy w/o the extra bits to expand the nuances.

All of it reminds me a lot of the complaints with the 0079 trilogy.
January 8, 2026 at 11:47 AM
F91 is def. not a looker (it has some nice scenes here & there) but it sure does what it can to make its main cast endearing.

For example, I really love the movie's portrayal of Seabook's nuance btwn his frustration w/ the war, his family dynamics & his instinct to jump to action when needed.
January 8, 2026 at 11:47 AM
We sadly couldn't postpone long enough to watch the 2nd one in time, but hey now we get to see F91 sooner!

This entire rewatch gave a whole flood of memories back. Mostly about how much I wish this was the series Tomino wanted to make and not a movie, but simply how good it is too.
January 8, 2026 at 11:47 AM
Hathaway also has one of my favorite fights in the UC series ever too, but you spend way more time engaged with each conversation traded btwn Hathaway, Gigi & Ken and the film is all the better for it.

In fact, the weakest part of this is probably the final battle but even that's nitpicking.

Right after NT was Hathaway 1 - such a superb film 4 years later (wild it's already that old)

Hathaway 1 also highlights one of my favorite parts of Gundam & mecha shows in general - intense character dialogue (supplemented w/ viewer knowledge) can feed just as great tension as a good skirmish.

Its attempt to highlight the purpose of Cyber Newtypes post-Unicorn is interesting but it doesn't do enough with it in its runtime, while its finale just feels like a worse version of Unicorn's.

I also wasn't a fan of Zoltan (or the rest of the cast either) but you get the picture by now. NT bad.😑
January 8, 2026 at 10:04 AM
New year, time to come back with a triple threat of UC Gundam movies! Sadly, the first at bat sure does suck.

Narrative feels like a film that feels unnecessary. Unicorn ends at a perfect point, NT doesn't do act as an epilogue in a sufficient way nor does it try to actually expand on that story.

Lastly, every year I like to focus on branching out my tastes more & I'm set on watching more shoujo/josei stuff this year.

Even more, beyond watching more romance, I'm gonna go through either Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura entirely. Y'all can hold me to that one at least🤞
January 3, 2026 at 9:40 PM
The other obvious big one is to get my portfolio shit in order - particularly having a consistent website & release more things.

Every year I say "I'm gonna release a game proper" and this is no different - but it's also a bit more serious when I feel like my professional output is also lacking.
January 3, 2026 at 9:40 PM
One is I want to enjoy writing more. I've always considered it one of my weakest points but it's nice to do write and reflect on stuff I've finished or thinking a bit deeper about Gundam sometimes.

Hell, hopefully this is the year I actually start doing blog posts like I've been meaning to proper

Been thinking a lot for the last couple days about new years resolutions. I try to take the "actionable" mentality with them and especially focus on more creative/personal endeavors.

I have at least three in my head that I've mulled over, but "thinking" is still rather different from "doing"

I'm not an advocate of supporting things just because X group made them - I share genuinely unique games that have something special about them that I think are worth checking out.

1. Headlines everywhere today read "Grok apologizes."

This is bullshit. A chatbot is not something that can apologize.

Pretending otherwise is simple laundering these companies' bullshit about what AI is, while diffusing blame away from the human beings that developed and released this system.

if you still use Twitter please understand that you are enabling and supporting this.

It’s only going to get worse, so you may as well leave now and start rebuilding your “following” anywhere else.
For the last few days on X, people (mainly women, and sometimes children) have had nonconsensual images of them in swimsuits (or much worse) requested by users and created by Grok.

Musk's only apparent response thus far has been to crack jokes about it.
so x dot com’s ai generated CSAM and they admitted it may violate US law and … i haven’t seen in anyone in power say much at all or call to stop using the platform

In addition to this, if you want to study Japanese but struggle to pin down what to study I suggest you;

1. Ask yourself why you want to study Japanese.

If it's to read manga then focus on reading skills. If it's to speak, do think like listen to podcasts and practice speaking with a teacher.
I see lots of people want to study Japanese for their new years's resolution, but it helps to build habits so you can do it consistently for the whole year. Here are some tips on how to build those habits.
